Laptop won't recognize new HDD as disk 0

    Laptop hard drive crashed and became unusable. Got a new hard drive (4x as large) for the laptop and gave it an NTFS format.

    When the drive is plugged in, the computer sees it as disk1, but not disk0 and won't boot. It is the only hard drive in the machine at this point.

    What needs to be done to make this computer recognize this new (and only) hard drive in the machine as disk0?

    The partition might not be set as active.

    You might have set the partition as logical/extended, rather than primary.

    I would boot to either the Windows CD or download the drive setup utilities from the manufacturer's website (there might be an .iso file to make a boot disk). Remove that partition and make a new one.

    Also, check to make sure that the BIOS of the laptop can handle the larger size HD. Sometimes a BIOS update is needed.

    There's nothing on there to make it bootable is there? You need an Operating System to do that;)

    What happens when you boot off the XP cd?
