I bought an aluminum HDD enclosure and put a spare HDD I had into it for a back up drive for my home network. I notice the whole thing gets quite warm. I would prefer to keep it on all the time for easy access. My question is this common and ok or should I buy another enclosure, possibly one with a fan.

    Thanks

HDDs can get quite warm. Try stopping it, opening the case and seeing if it is hot to touch. If you can't leave your fingers on it for 3 seconds that is around 60 degrees Celsius.

You need to check what is warm or hot. The aluminium case might be radiating heat (as cooling). A fan is probably better, but then, fans break down.

Do you find any problems accessing the drive?

Remember that backup is having the data recorded in two places at once. If one fails, the process should be simple to have it replaced and in working order again easily/quickly.

Thanks for the reply. The drive works fine. I just don't want it to catch fire or something. I can hold it, its not hot enough to burn me.

There's no chance of any fire, they run on low voltage.

They run the drive constantly at full speed, there is no power saving mode or not that I know of. I like turning mine off if I am not using it (if I remember :)).

Make sure it has a good airflow around the case.
