    What Windows version

First Windows version was just before 3.1, as my training group was just being put together at work. Plant site was on 3.0, and shortly after the group was put together the plant upgraded to 3.1.
But at home, and I wonder how many remember this one, I started with the Coleco Adam. This was a while before the upgrade at work. Cool little machine at the time. Next was a Commodore 128. When I started at home with a PC I was on 3.1.

I started with MSDOS Not sure which version it was - got my first PC with it around 1985 or so. Our children started using it in High school and took it to College with them to use to write their papers.

I still remember some of the commands and have used them a few times - sometimes easier.

My computer experience actually began with the Remington Rand Univac large scale systems in 1960. Only thing I missed programming for were the UNIVAC I and II which encompassed an entire room and were vacuum tube machines. What a difference from today.

First windows version 3.1 - used it at work.

Started with Commodore 64 - Graduated to 128 then through all the DOS iterations when I decided there was not enough practical software for Commodore then to all the Windows versions starting with 3.1 and on and on and on

    First computer use

Yeah, my first introduction to computer was when I hired on with a large chemical corporation to start up a new plant billed as the "most automated plant in the world ". This was in 1964 and the plant did not completely run on "auto" until the late 1980's, about a year before it was shut down for good. Actually, when I first hired on, worked for 6 week "break in" period in another area. They also had some very large computers there. When they were done away with about 10 years later, they made 3 unit supervisor offices out of the room it was in. And about the only thing it was good for was logging temperature readings in our log books every 2 hours. That was about the only part of its computer control that worked.:)

    Windows inside of Desqview

By the time Windows 3.1 started to be picked up by businesses, I was already highly productive using Dos 4 and Quarterdeck's DesqView, multitasking seemlessly and instantly between applications.

Then my company went to a Windows email system (ccMail). Rather than succumb to the snail-like performance of Windows as an "operating system," I configured my computer to run Windows 3.1 inside-of a 640k DesqView window.

It worked fine, and I was able to delay the productivity plunge that came when they finally forced me off DesqView, and onto the doggy Windows systems that followed. It took several years of faster computers before I got back to my DesqView productivity.

Yes, interesting reading, I began my computing experience with a Commodore 64, then progressed to an IBM, which I think had 64 ram, still have it too, would make a good anchor for a boat, it took 525 floppies, then I went on to windows 3.1, then to 3.11 W for Workgroups, then windows 95, then ME, then XP (the best), and now Vista, (a poor relation of XP.

    Cheers, Allan

    My sequence:

Kapro II (64k memory, 256K SS diskettes, blazing 2 MHz speed (which I boosted to 5 MHz requiring a big internal fan to keep it running :)

Then Dos, DesqView, Windows 3.1, Win95, jumped all the way to XP, unfortunately had to put one of my daughters on Vista (came with laptop . . . what a dog).

I've heard that Windows 7 won't be an available upgrade from XP. You have to start with a clean machine, clean install, and probably will want a powerhouse to run it. With that hurdle, I don't see myself changing to Win7 for a long time. If ever. Maybe it will be time for a Mac.

Yes, maybe, Lis (not never having used it, so not qualified to make comment), but just personally, XP has been the best that I`ve used, but not using now. "Vista ", came installed with this new computer, and I`ve found, to not being a patch on XP for performance. Wonder what the next OS will be like?

Not even close, in my opinion there were better OS's well before and since. As far as Windows goes though, yes 98SE was one of the better ones ;)

Not in my book. I used it for several years, and it was a good OS at the time. But, I had frequent crashes with all versions of 98, usually because I ran out of system resources. That hasn't been a problem with XP (Pro), which I consider to be the best of the Windows releases.

    Windows first used

Actually used DOS 5.0. Since that was not a selection for voting I selected Windows 3.1 there.

Man 'o man, Arie, this poll has drawn some people out of the woodwork that I haven't seen for a loooong time.

Anyway, don't quote me (wildfire), but I think this may have started in the "Eureka Moment" thread.

Back to topic: Ditto me with shardonair and allanzodiac for the Commodor64 with the membrane keyboard, cassette recorder, 5¼ floppies and a 10" greenscreen monitor as being my first "computer ". (The reason I put computer in quotes is because comparing those days to today is like comparing a velocipede to a 20 speed racing bike).

Also, I'd like to echo the sentiments of someone else here: Thanks a lot for making me feel old, Arie!

My first computer was the 48K ZX Spectrum in all it's glory and viewed on a TV. Then came the 512 Amiga viewed on the same TV but then graduated to a Commodore colour monitor (which still works to this day). The Amiga still works but the dikettes no
Then came my first PC in early 1995 and was a Mitac 486 DX2/66 with a whoopng 8MB of RAM and a super large 512MB HDD. It also had a 512K vga card and came with Windows for workgroups and DOS 6.1.

10 months after it was already a pentium100 with 16MB of ram and another harddisk with the "just came out" Windows95.

In my opinion, although Win98se was a "stable" os by the time it came its end of life, I would have to say that XP was the more stable OS out of the box.

Now I'm on Win 7 Pro after having spent a year and a half on Vista Business and have to say that out of the latter two, from a user's point of view, I do not see any major differences, from a complete user's point of view, that is.

DOS something, and the salesperson convinced me that I'd never have storing problems with the incredible HDD capacity of 60 MB.
