 Facts bearing on the issue:I am a rookie. Currently have one desktop PC, with 98SE, connected to Times Warner cable with a Motorola Surfboard modem. Desire to connect another new PC with windows 7. When all the data needed is transfered the 98se PC shall be unhooked for burial. Request information on how to accomplish this action. Please advise. Thanks for your time.

Can't you just put the HDD from the Win98 PC into the Win7 PC? It would be a lot easier and faster I reckon! Even if the new one has a SATA hard drive interface and the win 98 PC only has a PATA drive, you can just use a coverter to plug into the back. (You could probably get away with just disconnecting the CDROM and temporarily using its channel for the Win98 HDD if the new PC has both types of interface.)

I recently bought a SATA/PATA conversion kit off eBay from a seller in Hong Kong, and it was in the UK within 4 days at a cost of less than $5! The kit comes with a small PCB that plugs into the back of the older PATA drive, a Molex >> SATA power lead, and a SATA cable.

    Same as this:

    SATA >> PATA converter image.

If both machines have ethernet connectors, use a Cat5 crossover cable.
