I just received a new 500GB seagate freeagent portable USB hard drive.
Each time i try to transfer a large movie file into it, it just hangs my computer.
All opened applications will stop working one by one and eventually, my windows explorer stops working too.

    I an running a Vista 32bit OS.

The drive is probably formatted FAT32 which has a 4 Gb file limit - reformat it NTFS and try again :)

    Must say that sounds ominous.

You could try running Seatools diagnostics on it - from the list below ......

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

I'm leaving for the States in 3 hours or so for a couple of weeks - I'll alert a Team Member to continue with this.

Run Error Checking (CHKDSK) on the drive.

Interesting ... Have a 32GB flash drive did the same thing ... Only on large files (below 4GB). Trace problem to USB connection. Had a USB hub sourcing from back panel (desktop). Removed hub and connected Flash drive directly to back panel ... no issue.
In your situation, I would hook up external to a desktop/back panel USB connection. This would provide a better power source to external. Also, check to see what version update is on HDD. If xxxx.11, could be adding to the problem (Seagate had a stutter issue in that release).

Fyi, i'm using it on a laptop.
I've tried looking for an update for the drivers or the trouble shooting pages on seagate's website but it didn't work.
I will try checking my HDD and changing my power source to see how it works.
