   I have been trying to install AVG but the avgtdix.sys file is missing.

   I would clear out AVG using the AVG Removal Tool or Revo Uninstaller - noting that only the bolded registry items should be deleted and download a fresh copy of AVG and try again.

   AVG may not install on your 98 system, no longer supported by them. There is another really good free AV program that will.
