SATA drives not detected after XP reinstall

I recently caught a virus from a thumb drive, and after following all sorts of advice that didn't pay off I decided to format and reinstall XP. The virus I had (Flashey) disabled editors and other functions/software that may be used to remove it, including CD drives, which prevented me from reinstalling XP via CD. This is why I ended up at a local shop that assured me they could fix it.

I had 2 x 325 SATA hdds which were pretty much full, so while at the shop I added a 500gb SATA hdd for the new OS. Next, checked that the original two drives were free of viruses. Current status: 3 clean hdds.

XP installation on the new hdd drive was uneventful, with 30gb devoted to c: and the rest to d:.

Everything seemed fine, but back home and Ashampoo HDD Control listed several negatives with critical rating overall on the new hdd. Now, I live in Thailand and guarantees here are practically worthless, and anyway on computer stuff (which is almost all made in China) they're limited to 7 or 8 days, which has expired. But that's another issue and unrelated to my main predicament, which is: my original hdds (2 x 325gb) are no longer detected.

I have checked the wiring in the box and all seems well. No unknown devices are listed in device manager, and no diagnostic/optimise progs detect the 'missing' hdds.

Most of what's on the undetected hdds can be recovered from my backup computer, but it would be nice to have my storage back.

Is there a simple solution, or does this mean another visit to another robber?

Some thoughts on advice given to BG9208 in his similar thread, which I've just discovered.

I've previously reinstalled XP with my former configuration of two hdds, and don't recall having to install drivers or otherwise enter the bios. Until reading that drivers are needed, I had thought they would be insalled automatically when the hdds are detected.

My current install was with the shop's XP. Can I do a repair with my own disk?

PeteC: - Jumpers: good idea, thanks, will check it out. Maybe I've missed something but as the two hdds were working fine before, if it is a jumper issue then I can understand the former master refusing to play, but the former slave would still have the same status, so it should be detected.

XP will need to have drivers loaded for SATA drives using the F6 option at the beginning of XP's setup routine.

If drivers are needed I probably have them 'somewhere', but to be safe where can I download them from, and are they standard drivers or specific to each drive?

Required drivers are generally on the motherboard CD together with instructions in the manual as to how to install from a floppy or downloadable from the mobo manufacturer's website.

If you don't have a floppy drive .....

Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy (F6)
