Would anyone have any ideas as to why I cannot delete messages from my inbox in Outlook Express? Thank you.

    Hi Lugwalker
Have you tried it from safe mode?

Is this something new? Are you getting any message when you try to delete? Do the messages stay in Inbox? Are they still in an OE folder after a reboot?
If you have had the problem for less than five days you could try to run scanreg /restore from a MS-DOS start (or Restart). If more than five days, you could try to run IE Repair. Post back if you need help to do either.

    Thanks, folks.

When I try to delete messages in my inbox I get the message:
'Message cannot be deleted. An error has occurred.' The messages stay in my inbox - and have done so for a week now. I'll try starting in safe mode and also do the IE repair and get back to you. Much obliged.

    :)

You're welcome Lugwalker. I take it that safe mode didn't work?

Having same problem - express freezes if I highlight and push delete, or right click and delete. Express is also very slow to open.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled. All other 'boxes' can delete items. Also cannot move to deleted files from inbox.
    Any ideas?
    Ken

This is a good place for OE questions...

    This is from there.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why can't I delete messages inside OE?
That can happen if the Deleted Items folder is damaged. Move all messages you might want to keep out of the Deleted Items folder and into another mail folder you create. Close OE, then delete the file "Deleted Items.dbx" in your Identity's store folder. OE will create a new one when you re-open OE.

Sorry for the delay in dealing with the proposed solutions, folks, but my computer is in the workplace and not accessible at all times. I'm working on it!

As described above, OE was slowed way down. In fact was a friend's computer -- so advice was over the phone.
Following all your advice, I suggested the following -
Compacted inbox - still no delete - actually just very, very slow
Ran Norton Windoctor - fixed 45 problems
Ran Disk Doctor - fixed errors
Ran Norton SpeedDisk (defrag) - took 2 hrs and... voila
Everything running at good speed - including Outlook Express

Boy, his C Drive must have been badly fragmented.
As always, Having Norton Speed Disk put all the ducks in a row helps keep the old computer humming.

This may not be the same problem as Lugwalker has described as he indicates error messages.

Again, thanks for all your help
    Ken

My problem may not be the same, Ken, but I'll go through the procedures you mentioned anyway. They should do the computer some good. I'll let ye know how things go.

    Thank you.

Well, Daizy, when I go into Outlook Express in 'Safe Mode' I can now delete my emails in the 'inbox'. What is this telling me about the failure to delete in full mode? Thanks for the tip, by the way!

    :D

    Hiya Lugwalker!
Good news! Glad it worked for you. It may be telling you simply that it was "stuck "? Can you now delete normally?
