I've got a strange problem here. On my laptop, running XP, I have 2 WU icons in Control Panel. Neither one works. A right click only gives me the option to "Open" and Create Shortcut ". Clicking Open does nothing. I haven't tried the Create Shortcut though. Another thing is that there is no name under the icon. It is just blank under it. Windows Update, set for automatic updating, does seem to work otherwise. Any suggestions to clean up those icons? Thanks.

    Hi Pete,

I tried the Dial-a-fix program. I get the error message, "Dial-a-fix was unable to determine your version of Internet Explorer. Certain DLL registrations will be skipped. Please email dial-a-fix@DjLizard.net." I clicked OK and ran the program. I then went to the Windows Update site and ran WU. It found some updates which I installed. I rebooted and then checked Control Panel. Both icons are still there, but one has a title to it and the icon now works. The other is the same as before. I ran the D-a-F program again and checked the box marked Control Panel Applets to see if that would help. No go.

Any suggestions for getting that other icon out of there? Thanks for your help.

Not at the time of night here - literally off to bed :)

You might search for *.cpl and look for duplicates.

No duplicates found. I guess that would have been too easy.

    Hi Pete,

I had seen that site before and went back to it and tried all the steps. The location is listed as C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaucpl.old.cpl. (files were renamed to .old due to Windows Update problems last year, I can't remember the exact problem now) I tried to delete that file, but access was denied and I can not delete it. I downloaded and ran Shell Object Editor. Nothing came up. I was not able to switch to Expert Mode, I assume this is because nothing came up in the list.
