Subject sez it...Didn't do this before I put in SP1, but don't know if this is related. How do I stop it? This is a dialup with 56K modem. I use Mozilla 1.1. Norton Systemworks 2002 loads on boot, have dinked with settings, but nothing stood out, do not use live update. I do have Direct CD loaded, about v. 3.1 or so, and it does give shutdown message but I don't care. Why would it cause dialup anyway? I'll be checking Gozilla too. Any other system tray suspects? Network settings? Internet options settings? Thank you.

    Is AOL installed? ;)

I think there's a setting in IE somewhere (can't remember exactly) that says something like "never dial a connection" and when that's not set, it'll hit DUN to look for a connection when no cxn exists. I seriously doubt Direct CD has anything to do with it as I have never seen this behavior with my Direct CD app.

No AOL. Checked internet options, and it's set as it has always been on XP and on w98se before: "always dial my default connection. "
We do have ICS (internet connection sharing) but again, have always had this active for the last 1 1/2 years (thanks, Arie), never saw this problem. It happens even if the client PC is off.
Again, are there any (other) 3rd-party suspects? I'll be checking Quickbooks too. Thanks.

I tried your advice tric, going to where I think you mean, dialup preferences, autodial tab. That advice does not appear to me to be a fix, but to simply not use autodial. That is I uncheck "enable autodial by location ", and indeed, autodial stops dialing on boot. The question being, WHY does it dial on boot, and WHY do I have to disable autodial to stop it? The autodial wording has "autodial attempts to connect whenever you try to access remote info "... On bootup, I am not aware of what is trying to access remote info. If that is what is happening, how do I find out what it is & disable it? Thanks.

Spyware (some) can do this. And you usually won't like the location it tries to dial. If you don't have a spyware checker/remover, get Ad-aware and let it delete the stuff it finds.

    Hi Newt,
That was going to be my next suggestion,BTW did you know that there is another one called Spy-Bot Search and Destroy?
I found it on Web Attack.com it's free too,you can also choose what cookies to get rid of or keep and lots of other stuff, but if anyone reads this be careful with what you use.If you don't know what it is or does leave it alone!!!!!!!!:D

Thanks for the replies, y'all. Actually, it was in Symantec's Norton System Doctor (the little traffic light in the system tray). There are 2 internet sensors -internet packet turnaround, and internet speedometer, which I had activated. Once I removed them (each one caused the boot dialup, I had to remove both) from the System Doctor panel -- autodial on boot stopped. And now Mozilla, et al., happily autodial as before when I activate them, without using the dialup control panel.
And I had installed ad-aware just prior, and it found 14 bits o'spyware (now gone). Didja know that included Gozilla? Well, back to the less reliable Fresh Downloads.
