The fax is working. If I use the send fax command from the fax console, it will send a cover page. However, if I try to send a fax using "print" in any application, the "print" dialog comes up where I can select "Fax' as the printer, after that a window comes up briefly and goes away and nothing is faxed.
    Windows XP SP3.

Check Start > Run > type services.msc > press enter and see if the Fax Service is listed and set to either Automatic or Manual - not disabled or unlisted.

Then attempt to send a Fax. When it fails, check Start > Run > type eventvwr.msc press enter and click the System list to see what was reported at the time of your attempt.

Fax service is started and listed as automatic. eventvwr.msc showed an application error about MSSQL$PINNACLESYS. I had removed a product from Pinnacle. I just downloaded their registry cleaner and ran it but it didn't help. I will try their help forum.

    Thanks for your help!

I guess the messages about MSSQL$PINNACLESYS were misleading because I found two services related to that message and disabled them. Now the fax print still fails but now there are no messages in the error log.

Uninstall the Fax Services and reinstall it using the Control Panel Add/Remove programs feature for Windows Components.

Check for effect. If still no joy, Check the modem listing in Device Manager for any indication of errors. Go ahead and right-click it and choose uninstall. Then let Windows redetect and reinstall it. Be ready to furnish the setup CD. Then Right-click it again and choose Diagnostics and run that tool.

Check Services and verify that Remote Procedure Call [RPC] is set to Automatic and is running.

It won't let reinstall Fax Services: "Copy Error fxscom.dll" even though the file seems to be there??

Check the properties of the fxscom.dll that is located in the System32 folder. It should be version 5.2.2600.5512 and dated 8/4/2004 and weigh 72,192 bytes.

You should have at least three copies of that file on your drive and all of them should ordinarily be equal.

I think it's hopeless. I could find the file location and point the installtion to the file but it still would say it couldn't copy. So I started ignoring the files and it would come up with another. After dozens of files it finally said the service was installed but now it won't let me install a fax printer.

You could try running sfc /scannow to see if it replaces any files needed. I hold little hope for that though.

I doubt it's worth a repair install to you.

Consider getting some freeware fax program for the meantime if you need it.
