Can someone help me with getting my CD -rom to work. In my computer its says there is a A: drive but I dont have a A: it shows no D: drive. My CD-rom runs but doest read or play. I looked in the hardware profiles & there is no CD listed there. I tried to install a Cd rom but the hardward list doesnt list a cd-rom. thanks Karen

Hi Karen, can you give us some more detail about your OS. If you are operating Win XP Home go Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > have you got DVD/CD-ROM drives listed? If so, click on + and see if you have your brand of CD listed. If it is listed > Right click > click Properties and look at the bottom of the page and see whether Device Usage shows it enabled. Click on drop down and enable and OK your way out and see if it works. If not, go back to Right Click on brand name > click on uninstall > OK out and shut down computer. On Start up the system will find the device and install drivers. Let's know how you go. Neil.

If there is no CD-ROM drive listed Windows is not seeing the drive - the drive is clearly getting power as it spins up.

This is either a hardware or software problem .....

On the software side have you installed any software recently - more particularly burning software?

See this Microsoft KB artcle ......

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Use Fix It, but make a manual Restore point first before running the fix.

On the hardware side the data cable connecting the drive to the motherboard may have developed a fault or lost connection at either end.

If you feel competent open the case (this is a desktop?) and carefully remove the ribbon cable from the drive and replace - do the same at the motherboard end.

If the drive is still not seen you should try a replacement cable.

Bottom line is that the drive may have failed - I guess it has worked previously?

BTW - if you have a floppy drive that is your A:\ drive.
