Finally got the time and a small HDD to run Win 7 RC1. So far my complaint is no audio. I tried the Windows updater and no luck. But since it was an old Yamaha I figured to swap it out for an old Sound Blaster Live 5.1. Still nothing, and I went to S/B's website to update the drivers but there were none. I am running a 3 year old Gigabyte mobo with a Celeron 3.33Ghz & 2 Gigs of RAM. Yes I have the software for this Sound Blaster but figured that this is the newest Windows so it wouldn't be worth a try. Unless it is deemed so.

Unless somebody has a plan I don't see getting the audio to work in WIN 7 because when I got out of the 'net I noticed the flag at the bottom right and it gave me a list of problems and both of my printers are NOT W7 compatible and neither are the 2 sound cards I tried. There were some suggestions on some other S/B cards to use but I will deal with that later.

Thanks for lookin' at this problem, anyway.

Does your Motherboard have on board sound, if yes then you could try AC97, change the setting in the BIOS to on board.
    Worth a try.

    Drifting off topic .....
Don't necessarily believe that :) I am running a 15 year old HP Deskjet 520 on Win 7 Pro x64 perfectly. Install manually and select the printer from the list offered - if not listed hit the Browse button and Windows will search online . Worked for me although the 520 was not listed the 500 was.

Try a Google - my Canon Lide 35 scanner would not install - a quick Google suggested to install it as a Lide 60 - works a treat.

    Do not give up :)

Sorry I spaced this post of mine:eek:. Anyway as for the sound card situation !) I do have onboard AC97 audio. 2) I installed Win7 with the Yamaha card. So when I put in the SB5.1 it didn't have any drivers for it or whatever. So I will look at trying the AC97 sound as I am not impressed with the SB5.1. The Yamaha blows it away.

As for the Off Topic with the printers I will look into the drivers section.

When I installed Win7 I went with the thought of XP. Install it and it finds most of the important hardware. i.e. sound cards, video cards, *ROMS, monitors and the like. True it didn't find my monitor, but that might be because it is a NEC business class monitor. And as for the printers I am used to Linux and HP they're all in there.

Right now I am on one of my Linux drives and need to redo my bootloader for the Win7 drive.

I'll let you know as soon as I can.

Would have posted sooner but one of my hard drives went bad, MBR problems. I have been trying to get that working so I can pull stuff off.

Anyway, to get back on topic. I turned on the AC97 audio and I now have sound. I will look in to the printers problem altho that ain't as importent as the other hardware.

Now I can play with this new OS and see if I am impressed;).

I have a Gigabyte mobo with a Realtek ALC655 CODEC chip on an Intel chipset. And to be honest even though I have sound this Realtek is about as good as the SBL5.1. Again nowhere near my old Yamaha. But weak sound is better than no sound:).

Sound Blaster Live 5.1 won't even work in Vista. However, google and you will find hacked Vista drivers for that card that will work in Win7 too. I got mine working, however you will get an "unknown device" in Device Manager, it's the sound card's game port, which won't work. Not a big deal for me. The sound is about half the volume of same card installed in XP though.

Like I mentioned when I got the AC97 working.... the SBL5.1 and the AC97 lack the power of the Yamaha card I started with. I will leave the AC97 hooked up and hopefully I can find a Yamaha card to work in Win 7. Or maybe a newer Sound Blaster series card that might have the power to compete with the old Yamaha.

yeah i'm using an old SB Audigy card only because the win vista driver don't work very well for my onboard sound ( ADI 1988HD )AKA SoundMax or BlackHawk and their website blows for drivers they dont have any and asus are yet to update them to work in win 7. But I do find the audigy works fine even less the game port which i never used anyways

Hmmmm looks like having a Gigabyte board with Intel chipsets helps.

I might be able to get the Yamaha to work in Win7. I was Googling around for drivers and I came across a site that apparently has drivers to work in Vista. The drivers are also an enhancement for the Yamaha card. As the card I have is the better chipset of that line.

Cross my fingers tomorrow and hope it works.

Well I put the Yamaha card back in and downloaded the Vista drivers I found and after about 15 minutes of trying various ways to get the drivers installed it finally started doing something. BSOD. There was a lot of writing but the only thing I had time to write down was " bad pool header ". Probably nothing I can do until the main release of 7 and see if I have any better luck with this Yamaha card.

    Hello Tony

I had the same 'Unknown Device' problem under the Audigy card and got this fixed quite a while ago.

Right-click on Unknown Device and select Update Driver Software/Browse My Computer/Let Me Pick From A List/untick Show Compatible Hardware/select Creative Technology Ltd (first one of two - ignore Creative name on its own/click Unsupported Gameport for Creative on right pane then click Next....ignore message about not being compatible and voila you're done - no more 'Unknown Device'.
