Mystery files

    I have many problems. Wonder if the two large mystery files can be the explanation. These are hiberfil 0.5Gb and pagefile 0.8Gb. I am prevented from deleting them in explorer as they are said to be in use. I am prevented from deleting them in MS-DOS, although they display in dir \AH, as as told they do not exist.

    pagefile.sys = the paging file (swap file).

    (1) To replace pages or segments of data in memory. Swapping is a useful technique that enables a computer to execute programs and manipulate data files larger than main memory. The operating system copies as much data as possible into main memory, and leaves the rest on the disk. When the operating system needs data from the disk, it exchanges a portion of data (called a page or segment ) in main memory with a portion of data on the disk.

    hiberfil.sys, is a copy of the computer's RAM when the computer goes into hibernation. It's size corresponds to the amount of RAM on your computer, usually anywhere from 512 MB to ove

    Turn off Hibernation - not very useful and more trouble than it is worth IMHO - and hiberfil.sys will disappear.
