I thought that being that there are 2 separate partitions, both OSs would see the drive as 2 separate drives and therefore not cross over from one half to the other. Am I wrong? Also, what is a RAW drive and could this be why I'm having this problem?

This is getting a bit beyond my own expertise but AFAIK a RAW drive is simply a disk partition that has not been formatted with an NT file system, neither FAT nor NTFS. See if you can convert the RAW drive to NTFS. That issue right there could be the source of your problem.

When I go into disk management to view the partitions, it says that both are NTFS.

    DRV1_VOL1 C:
    112.71 GB NTFS
    Healthy (System)

and for drive D: which is the boot drive it states:

    D:
    353.04 GB NTFS
    Healthy (Boot).

Hmm. If its not a RAW drive then why would check disk not be able to run during boot up? I've done some googling and from what I've found, your harddrive might be failing. You should test the harddrive using Harddrive Diagnostics from your harddrive manufacturer to see if the drive is free of errors.

Have you recently "wiped" your drive lately? I did this once and when it showed 100% done, a warning popped up that I was running low on disc space. Afterwards, I saw a huge gain in disc space (91% free), but my restore points were wiped out when I knew previously that I had about two months of restore points. I don't know if this is your problem, but it happened to me. Also, what is the point of running two XP's? I have XP Pro, but don't need two of them.

No, nothing not that advanced. I mean the "wipe free space" function in programs such as CCleaner. This will erase your restore points. That's what I was talking about. The program you showed me, you use to do a fresh install or if you trade in or donate your system. There are many freeware programs that have privacy features such as securely deleting temporary internet files, cookies, and so on. I just wondered if you used such a program, because I wiped out my own restore points with CCleaner. It can happen to anyone. I've learned to be careful in using these programs.

No, I re-installed Windows Restore as per directions from a few posts back but it didn't do any good. Read all of the posts in this thread from the beginning and you'll see all that I have done so far.

So Matt, have you ran the harddrive diagnostics yet?

I ran the extended scan from Western Digital which took about 2 hours to complete and it passed with flying colors.

Well thats good news. At least we now know that the harddrive is good.

BTW you never got back to me regarding sfc /scannow. Were you able to run the command?

Yes, I performed all as you mentioned below.

"You might have some corrupt Windows files on your harddrive. Click Start< Run and type sfc /scannow and hit enter. Have your Windows XP CD handy in case SFC needs a file.

When that finishes click Start< Run and type cmd and hit enter. The command prompt window will open. Type chkdsk /r and hit enter. Check Disk will report that it can't run while Windows is running and will ask you if it can run on reboot. Type Y and hit enter. Reboot the pc for Check Disk to run.

If those 2 options don't get system restore working can you boot into Safe Mode and test to see if System Restore works there? "

I performed "sfc /scannow" before I performed "chkdsk /r" but it made no difference. You already know about the RAW issue with chkdsk. I had to reboot the computer in order for chkdsk to work. When it rebooted chkdsk was called autochk and said that the drive was a RAW drive and that autochk cannot scan a RAW drive.

Ok. Have you tried booting to the other OS partition and attempting to create a Restore point? You said that you can't create one in XP Pro, can you boot into XP Home Edition and see if you can create a restore point there?

From this point since you can't run chkdsk from within Windows lets see if we can run it from the recovery console. Boot from your Windows XP CD and when it has finished loading you will be presented with 3 choices. Press F3 to quit setup, Press Enter to install Windows XP, and Press R to enter the recovery console. Go ahead and press R. Now you will be prompted to select which OS to log into. If Windows XP Pro was the OS that you installed after Home Edition then press the number 2 and hit enter. Next type the administrator password. If you don't have one leave it blank and hit enter. Now type chkdsk /r and hit enter. See if the command will run from there.

I mentioned that I could create a restore point in XP Home back in post #19. I will try what you said above and I'll let you know what happens.
    Thanks

As I type this on my laptop, my main computer is currently having it's hard drive scanned with chkdsk /r after following the previous post to me and it scanned pretty fast up until it got to 25% and then it slowed down to 1% every 7 seconds and slowed down even more once it got to around 40 something % complete at 1% every 1 to 2 minutes.

So the plus side is that chkdsk does work from the repair console on the cd-rom.

OK, after about 2 hours, it completed chkdsk and said that it found 1 or more errors and corrected them. I typed exit and the computer rebooted, I selected xp pro for my OS, the next thing it does is run chkdsk again and then gives the same message about the drive being RAW and that is doesn't scan RAW drives. So, I still have the problem there and now I have noticed my computer is hanging more often now. I have run virus scanners on it but turn up nothing. The only thing else that I know of to do is reinstall XP Pro over the existing OS.

    Clueless

To be honest I don't know what else to suggest. Since you have XP Home and Pro you can try backing up your data on your XP Home Edition Partition, then boot into Windows XP Pro and remove the XP Home partition and see if you can create a restore point. I am pretty much just as stumped as you are as to why you can't create a restore point.

Do you suspect this machine is infected? Some virus will get into system restore to keep a copy of themselves. Maybe try something like malwarebytes or other free scanner and scan the machine.

I ended up backing up what I wanted to save and transferring some of it over to the other partition which was the C: drive and reinstalled windows along with all of the drivers that came with the board. I have now been able to create restore points with no trouble at all.

I would have liked to have been able to solve this problem so that any future problem like this that comes along again, we would know what to do in order to avoid ultimately having to format the drive, but it just seemed to be something that nobody has been able to find an answer to. I did find a lot of other people having the same problem as I but would end up doing the same thing by formatting or they would just not respond back on their thread to say what they did in the end.

I am sorry that I couldn't be of more help. At least your issue is now resolved. Sometimes a clean install of Windows is the only way to resolve problems like yours. Lets just hope that you don't experience this problem again in the future.
