I'm running Vista on a Sony Vaio laptop. Just recently it will not recognize CDs. It makes an odd noise, then ejects the disc. It reads DVDs fine. Any thing I can check to see what the problem is?

Thanks for the link, Evan. I just downloaded and tried that program. It says that the disc in the disc drive is not readable.

But it is readable. The CD works fine in other computers and music players.

Is my disc drive on the blink? As I say, it works fine with DVDs.

Your CD/DVD drive could be failing. At least we know that the CD itself isn't to blame. Go to Device Manager and check to see if there are any Red X's or Yellow Exclamationd Point next to the CD/DVD drive. Try right clicking on the CD/DVD drive in Device Manager and select uninstall. Reboot the computer to allow Windows to reinstall the driver for the CD/DVD drive. If that doesn't work then you may have to replace your CD/DVD drive.

DVD optical drives make use of 2 lasers to read CD's & DVD's due to the differing track/data density. Sounds like there may be a physical problem with the CD laser circuitry.

As the lasers may well have a common lens cleaning may be ineffective, but worth a shot. On a laptop drive at least you can see the lens when the tray ejects and can check it out.

The 'odd noise' is probably the head tracking back and forth searching for readable data.

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I called Sony and they agreed that it is a hardware problem. Luckily there is still a month left on the warranty. They are sending a new CD drive, and I have to send them the old one back. Nice not to have to send in the whole laptop.

Sony's replacement optical drive arrived, I installed it, and the CD drive now works. You can officially call this one resolved.

Sony was very easy to work with once I decided the people on their "chat" support service did not know much. They even told me to reinstall Windows Vista on the laptop. I told them no way.

Once I was done with them, I called Sony Vaio warranty service and they were very knowledgeable and helpful. They sent the replacement by FedEx overnight, and it had excellent instructions with color photographs and even a magnetic screwdriver in the package. (It had a tag on it that was in Japanese. It also had a hook for hanging in a store display. Someone at Sony must have bought a bunch of these in Japan.) They also sent a prepaid label for me to send the defective part back.

I was impressed by the Sony warranty service. Too bad the warranty expires in a month.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize that I was the one who was supposed to mark the problem "resolved." I'll know next time.

Thanks, as always, for the great help on the problem.
