    Hello,

I just came out of the Virus and Malware section where I had my system cleaned but the laptop is still shutting down periodically yet unpredictably.
I was advised to start a thread here to receive assistance to solve this very frustrating problem.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Overheating and or a failing power supply are two main culprits for random shutdowns.

Approx how long will it run before shutdown?
If you turn it right back on - how long will it run?

I will try to answer your question to the best of my ability. A number of ways I will respond:

    1. I would be working on the laptop e.g. browsing through folders, running programs etc, and it would shut down. Right now it is up and running since I did a windows repair (Vista) but I find the main time it shuts down is when I have to reboot (this happens sometimes) or as I said unpredictably while I am just working normally on the system. The system would be up for a while and working pretty well and then it would just shut down.

    2. The main problem occurs when I have to reboot and it shut down or when I turn it back on after a shut down. Sometimes even trying to do the repair it shuts down. It does pass the initial boot screen but as soon as the screen comes up with options it sometimes shuts down there, or maybe when the vista sliding bar comes up, or just before the login screen comes up, or right after I login before the desktop comes up or as soon as the desktop comes up it would shut down again. So it can happen at different intervals.

    3. To combat the heating I have a large fan running on it so I have somewhat ruled out overheating and I also ruled that out too because as I said the system would run for hours good without shutting down. Could be a failing power supply but I'm not sure.

    4. I was wondering if it could be a corrupt registry since it shuts down at various intervals during the attempted boot up but again I'm not sure.
