I have my computer set to download automatic updates. I'm also an internet shopper. Since the last two automatic updates, I've lost the zoom feature that allows me a closer look at products. I've never had this problem before, and I'm very careful not to get into the system and click on something when I'm not absolutely sure about. I've been told that it has something to do with Java Script and/or Active X controls.
Would it be better to turn off the automatic update feature and download only the ones that I'm sure I need?

    I'd appreciate any advice.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I have moved your thread to the Internet Explorer forum - this is not an XP problem as such.

Would be helpful to know which version of IE you are using and whether the recent updates included IE8

I assume by 'zoom feature' you refer to the zoom button in the lower right hand corner of IE?

Thank you, Pete, for correcting my error. I apologize for my ineptness. I'm using IE8 and have all the updates. Because of a disability, I shop from home on the Net. Most catalog pages show the item and then have a 'click to zoom' link under the picture. Mine worked before the last two updates, but now I don't get anything. Others have told me that it might be my ActiveX control, or javascript. I don't like messing with the system settings. I know I haven't explained this very well, but I don't know how else to state it. I feel embarrassed to ask such silly question, but it bugs me why it worked before and not now.
    Thanks again for your reply.

No question is too basic - if you don't know the answer :) That is why we are here - to help out folk at all levels of computing ability.

You have explained the problem admirably and I understand exactly the nature of the problem.

I am going to hazard a guess here and suggest that one of the updates you received was IE8.

As in IE 7 there is a Compatability button shown alongside the Refresh button at the end of the Address Bar. This will show when the website being viewed is not fully compatible with the browser. Are you seeing that on the sites in question?

It may be an ActiveX control, but, in general, if one is required a message to that effect comes up in the Information bar at the head of the page.

It may be Java - what version are you running? Check out in Add/Remove Programs - the current is Update 16. Post back with your version.

It is very straightforward to remove IE8 and return to IE7, but we''ll pass on that at this stage.

As a temporary workaround use the magnification button at the bottom right corner of the window to enlarge your view of the site.

It would be interesting to know if the problem remains in Firefox - you can install and run this alongside IE - simultaneously if required.

Thank you. Still no luck. I have Java version 15. Version 16 doesn't seem to be available to me unless I'm looking at the wrong sites. I've never used Firefox, mostly because I've never needed too. I know others really like it, but I generally do not add programs unless I absolutely have to. My husband, who has far more PC experience than I has finally given up and says he just doesn't know. I have noticed that now I get some sights to zoom, but others don't. Seems to be no rhyme or reason. I'm sorry to keep bothering you with this, but it just nags at me that I can't figure it out. I do very much appreciate your time and thoughts.

Check which version of IE you are using - Help > About Internet Explorer and post back.

Have you tried Compatability Mode - if available, on a site that is troublesome? - it is the at the end of the Address bar, before the refresh button and only shows when IE detects incompatability.
