Just installed the final Win7 Pro yesterday.

Noticed when rt click Start menu > select properties, one cannot customize the menu as in Vista. I prefer the classic menus but they don't seem to be available in Win7. Via Google I saw 3rd party apps to customize the start menu, but there has to be a way to tweak this natively.

I could get used to the existing Win7 start menu IF IF all programs was displayed by default and I would not have to click on the link to show all programs in the pane. Any way to do that?

By ‘customize’, do you mean change the alphabetic sort order?

If so, firstly, right-click the Windows Orb (Start) > Properties > Start Menu Tab > Customize, scroll down to the bottom and remove the tick from Sort All Programs menu by name > OK > Apply, etc.

Now go to Start > All Programs and select the program you want to reposition, hold down the mouse left button and drag the program up or down until you see the message ‘Move to ……’, then release the mouse where you want it positioned.

No, I understand how to customize the menu.
In XP, one can revert to the classic menu.
In Vista, one could also revert to the classic menu.
But in Win7 the classic menu is not available. (at least I've not found it yet)

Click Orb > there's a white pane on left and some common folders on right (personal folder, Computer, Control Panel, etc).

If I click the Orb the left pane is empty, as I have customized it that way. To see all programs I must click the all programs text link. I want to have all programs list displayed without having to click that text link.

Right-click desktop > Personalize & under Basic and High Contrast Themes choose Windows Classic.

I haven't looked beyond that to make it look/feel more like XP, if I have some spare time I may do that later...

Yeah. I've seen that, but the classic theme is ugly.

I can live with the new start menu IF I wouldn't have to go to the xtra step of having to click the all programs link. It would be nice to just click the orb and see my list of programs.

My preference is to have program icons and document/spreadsheet/database shortcuts on the desktop.

Done it since 3.1 (multiple Prog Manager windows) through 98, XP and now 7 - rarely go anwhere near the Start Menu :)

yeah use the right click and pin to start menu / Taskbar on freq used programe but you need to untick the store recently used / opened programs files on the start menu and taskbar which can be found under the right click taskbar/properties/start men tab
