Resolved What's your experience w/ Spybot Search & Destroy?

    I've been using it for a while now, and it's never found anything (maybe that's good, maybe it's not).
    I've recently read here where a member had horendous issues from it, so I'm wondering if it's really worth the RAM it occupies.
    I also use Windows Defender, Comodo Firewall (not much gets past Comodo), Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, Advanced SystemCare, and CCleaner, .
    Considering going w/ SUPERAntiSpyware, so I'd also like to hear about your experience, if you have it, w/ that, or any of the other programs I've listed.

    Been using it for years with Tea Timer. Never had a problem. Use it on several PC's.

    You can stop Tea Timer. If I remember right, it comes checked with the download and you have to uncheck it.
    I use Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Malwarebytes, CCleaner and AVG. All are the FREE versions. Have never had a PC problem using them. I do keep them updated. Usually check for updates on Spybot, SB and CCleaner weekly. The others everyday. AVG does it automatically.

    According to broni Spybot and AdAware are both past their sell by dates - current recommendations are the freeware versions of Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

    That pretty much confirms it then. I'll dump Spybot and go w/ SuperAntiSpyware.
    Do you know if it stays resident like Spybot?

    Pete, do you know if there's any reason to continue using CCleaner?
    I just switched to Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware, and still have Advanced SystemCare.

    CCleaner is a good tool, as long, as you stay away from registry part.
    That's one of the reason (temptation), I don't steer people toward CCleaner anymore.

    I recommend:
    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
    Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
    Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
    TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    or...

    2. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

    Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Unselect Cookies.
    Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    Unselect Cookies.
    Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Opera browser
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    Unselect Cookies.
    Click the Empty Selected button.

    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    If you want my 2 cents.

    I used Sybot regularly for a long time and it would always pick up several bad guys. Then I tried Defender. Spybot finds nothing now.

    I also use SuperAntiSpyware (paid) version, works great.
    When I downloaded my version, at that time they were offering a LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION for $9.95 CAD.

    I have been using Spybot for years and never had any problems with it. I was surprised by how much malware it picked up on some of the infected pc's that I've ran it on. In addition to using Spybot Search and Destroy, I use Spyware Blaster, Malware Bytes Anti-Malware, and Windows Defender. All of those programs work great and they are all free which is even better.

    If I remember I did that & #1.6.0 seemed fine. It never found much however & if I ran a scan it might find 6 or 7 tracking cookies. I would run SAS to compare & SAS would find 60 or 70!

    It was when I upgraded to 1.6.2. that the problems with Tea-Timer began. If it works for you, then by all means use it. I'll never download Spybot onto a computer I own again. :eek: :mad:

    I had been a faithful user of Spybot and Adaware years ago. For the past couple of years, however, they found nothing. So, I dumped both. Both Malware Bytes and SuperAnteSpyware in their free versions do not provide a resident scanner (that is only provided when you upgrade to the paid versions). As for third-party programs such as CCleaner and so forth, I believe Windows (XP and Vista) do an adequate job of cleaning and defragging without the need for these. Besides... there is very little gain made in terms of what they provide according to the many experts I've read. The so-called gains are difficult to prove and may be little more than perceptions in the minds of the users.
