Hello I did a search and found this thread but it was closed. so I could not post in the thread. Sorry if there was a newer one.

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/40227-add-remove-pgrms-fails-rundll-appwiz-cpl-error.html

Now when I ran this code regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i in the cmd it fails and the return code is 0x8002801c any help would be appreciated

I figured I would wait till I purged the cache and run a sfc scan. Did not want to get ahead of myself in case its an easier fix of just dl the file.

EDIT: I am about 98% sure I do not have the original xp cd. How ever I do have others but not the exact one that this one was installed from. Will this be a problem?

That's probably a "permissions" problem. You must be logged on under an account with Administrator privileges to run that command.

In that case, your permissions setting may be incorrect.

Download Dial-A-Fix. It's a stand alone program that takes no installation. Unzip the download to its own folder and open the folder and double-click the executable named Dial-A-Fix.exe..

When the program opens, click on the claw hammer icon at the bottom. Then scroll the list and select Repair Permissions. When that completes, go back to the opening page and click on the green check mark. That will run all of the programs of DAF. After verifying the time and date, Allow a few minutes for it to complete the rest of the fixes..

When completed, close out and reboot. Check for effect.

this did not work. I am 98% sure it is not a permissions problem. When i used this software of yours it said i was missing a wuw.dll file as well as wuwpe.dll file

I'd go ahead and do that now. It sounds like you have some corrupt or missing files. There's no guarantee that SFC can fix that condition. If you don't have the XP setup CD (or have the I386 folder copied somewhere) , you may have to live with this problem.

Here's how that goes for doing the repair Install: The CD must be the same version of XP (Home or Pro) as what is on your computer now. Furthermore, if you have an OEM installed system and are not using the OEM CD, you may have to call MS to get a new product code. If you had the original OEM CD, no call would be needed.

Don't let any of that deter you from attempting a repair if you have a legitimate installation and have the original product code. MS will not be the problem.

well I do have 3 legitimate codes and cd's just not the cd that was used to install this version of xp. This is someone elses computer that was bought and no cd was ever given when bought. They said they have a restore disc but cant find it. Ill try the scan and see what happens.

Not something I want to live with as it does not let me access add/remove programs from the control panel and My comodo does not seem to want to update either.

EDIT ok none of this worked I even tried deleting the file as well as updating IE as I read somewhere that sometimes fixed it. Also read that some people have updated to sp2 which is the same version I have, But that got my curiosity in wondering if I updated to the sp3 then just rolled back if it would work.

As I dont have the same xp disc I might be forced to reinstall which means backups but there is an awful lot of stuff to back up almost a TB.

Ill try a few more virus scans etc and see what happens.
