Please, someone help me, on my main computer ive been having major problems, when i start up my pc, no matter what i press it restarts, if i press "Last configuration that worked" it will load up then not display anything, just a black screen.

I cant go into safe mode ( it restarts ) i tried changing settings in the BIOS, just doing random things like disabling/enabling this i dont know, what they do.

If i press "disable restart upon error" it will take me to the blue screen of death, i do not have a windows xp CD to install/repair, is there an alternative way to fix this, ive heard good things about this forum hope you can help me:(

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Fixing problems such as this without an XP installation CD can be tricky, if not impossible ....

However a good starting point would be to post the error code on the BSOD screen and any file that is referenced.

The interpretation of your Error Code ....
I suggest you check out your hard drive with the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - as you cannot use software to determine the make of the drive you will need to open the case and have a look ......

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Use the DOS version of the software which will enable the diagnostics to run on boot from a bootable CD.

No - we don't give up that easily :) Anyway if you put the drive from the slow computer into the fast computer you would most likely need to make a repair install of the OS as the hardware has changed.

First check out the drive as suggested.

Do you have access - via a friend, co-worker, .... to an XP install CD of the same Service Pack level as the version of XP on the failed computer?

Have you done this and what was the result?
You may get away without a repair install - I did on my recent rebuild - so it is worth a try. If you succeed you will need to load the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

XP was withdrawn from retail sale some time ago - it is now 2 operating systems old being superseded by Vista and shortly (Oct 22) by Windows 7 which I am currently running.

However to answer your question directly .....

Dabs have copies available - see http://www.dabs.com/search?q=Windows XP

At this stage I would consider the alternatives - see if you can borrow a copy of an XP install CD of the same version as that which you are running - Home or Pro. When making a repair install an XP CD at the same Service Pack level as the installed Operating System is required - don't be concerned about that now as there are straightfoward ways of combining a later SP into an older CD (slipstreaming). See if you can borrow a CD - then I will post details as required.
