TFC cleared out 186mb of files....not sure where they came from.
That tmp file is in a profile of my old XP installation, not sure if TFC will get that. I deleted the temp folder manually and ran TFC again. Another 2.86mb gone.

Nothing resembling TDSS in the device manager...

Are you still working with IE (no add-ons)?

    One more thing to do.
Go Tools>Internet options>Advanced tab, and click "Reset" button.
    Restart computer.

Try, what I said before. Reset IE. It'll disable all add-ons.
If no redirection, you can try enabling them back, one-by-one, restarting IE each time, until you'll find the culprit.

Sorry I completely missed the suggestion to reset IE. Have done it now and am trying to replicate the issue.

Having done the reset am using IE normally now. Even my wife can't get the redirect issue happening.....fingers crossed again.
I will keep searching and post what happens.

    Thanks again Broni.

I had suggested that but strangely I didn't win that discussion!!!

Everything seems fine again. I have restarted and tried everything (including the wife) to get the issue to re-occur but it seems to be behaving normally (and slightly faster???) now.

I am hoping this will be the end of it. Do I need to do anything in particular to stop it happening again. I do not recall ever letting anything install that I wasn't expecting or wanting. I never install search bars etc.

Will keep putting the laptop through it's paces and will post my findings.

    Later :D

In cases like this one, it's better to stop banging your head against the wall.
It'd be rather impossible to say what really happened.
Just enjoy the wife, and hope it won't happen again :)

I'll mark this thread as resolved (for the second time...LOL)

I don't want any more email notifications about you posting in this thread again.....just kidding.
