Touch Screen POS system - a question

I'm trying to sort out a new point-of-sale terminal for a friend's cafe. These machines are an all-in-one unit, ie, a kinda Atom pc attached to the back of a 12" or 15" touch screen. Apparently these units often come without an operating system, but the customer has an XPP that he wants me to use.

I've been asking the following question of suppliers, but not getting any intelligent answers:
Can I load an operating system, say XPPro, and have it recognize the touch screen? I mean, this is what happens with a bare laptop. You load XP and when it fires up it sees the touchpad straight off.

But the sales people I've been talking to either don't know or won't tell me, perhaps to force the purchaser into buying a new OS. Anyone here had anything to do with these POS terminals? The one I'm looking at Javelin POS500.

Thanks mattman. I didn't expect too many responses. I'd never laid eyes on one of these units myself until a few days ago, though once I'd seen it, I realized that almost every retail business has one.
