I am trying to help my daughter 1000 miles away with a System Restore problem. I suspect it may be turned off, but there is no SYSTEM icon under Settings, Control Panel to check the status. Is there another place to look?

Right click My Computer, select Properties then click on the System Restore tab.

Make sure there isn't a check mark in the box for Turn off System Restore on all drives.

There is a nasty little piece of sh-t going around called 'skynet' You can get rid of it by using AVG Rootkit Scanner (FREE) Google it and download and install. It takes just a few minutes to scan and remove it. Good luck !!

Assuming you are running XP PRO:

    Start
    All Programs
    Accessories
    System Tools
    System Restore

    Will (should) get you there.

Go into services either in the control panel or
    start > services.msc
The services list is arranged alphabeticaly
Ensure that the system restore service is not "disabled "
It can be set to "automatic "
Sometimes the system restore or the recovery data has been corrupted - either by itself or by some malware / virus
You can use an open source 3rd party that some like more than the included Windows program
One such program is called "erunt "
Works Windows 2000. XP and Vista

Thanks to all who responded. Illness forced a pause in the pursuit of the problem; we are now back at it and will probably re-install.

Meaning a Repair Install ? Would do that first before considering a clean install - unless she has only a Recovery CD.
