I want to do a complete fresh install of xp on my dell laptop. it's running VERY slow and full of junk. I've backed up all my data and received the corect xp disc from dell. but I get errors when doing a restore so I want to do a clean install. the only room apparently is on the same partition as the existing win xp. it's telling me not to do that!

is there a tutorial on how to do a complete clean install of xp?

    Thanx

Its a bit hard to figure out whats going on.
Did Dell send you a Restore cd or a OS Install cd?

It's saying that having 2 copies of windows on the same partition is unstable.

How unstable? Can I create the second copy and then delete the first without problems?

By all rights, you should be able to boot up with this CD dell gave you, and during the installation process it will show you all the partitions and what OS is installed on them. Highlight each of these options in turn and delete that partition.

You will end up with 1 big partition labeled as "unpartitioned space." install the OS to this partition, following the prompts on screen.

Of course, this only applies if I've understood your problem correctly...

I have a blue screen that shows the partitions.

    _: Partition FAT 63mb 55mb free
    C: Partition NTFS 52407mb 34673mb free
    E: Partition 3 FAT32 4754mb 512mb free
    Unpartitioned space 8mb

I can delete all these? Or all except the last one? Then continue with the fresh install?

looking at the disc, it says...

    Operating system
    already installed on your computer
    Reinstallation DVD
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Version 2005 with update Rollup 2

Only use this DVD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell PC
This DVD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers.

E:\ is probably the Del Restore Partition
    C:\ is the main drive
_:\ is probably the diagnostics which I understand can be run from the Dell Drivers CD.

IMO you can delete the lot, but before you do so be sure that you have the Dell Driver disk to hand - you will need to reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers, etc once XP is installed. If you don't have it download the required drivers from Dell before you format the drive.

well, it's really messed up now. the driver disc won't load drivers. all the drivers for the modems are gone so I can't do any online updates. I've tried reloading, deleted partitions, etc. nothing works

now what? the computer is totally a mess

update now that I am at the computer...all the "other devices" have a yellow question mark; ethernet controller, audio controller, network controller, pci modem, video controller

Not clear from your post (understand your frustration, BTW) whether or not the OS is running.

Download the drivers direct from DELL

Well you are clearly on the net to post here so download the drivers to the computer you are using and transfer across on USB stick.
