I have Automatic Updates set for "Download Updates for me, but let me choose when to install them ". The system is Windows XP/Pro, SP2, with all the latest updates (except Explorer 8). Occasionally, the only option I get is "Install Updates and Shutdown ", when what I want to do is a "Restart ". Is there a way to force windows to install the updates without doing the shutdown? Also, I do not remember Windows "presenting" me with the list (this time) of what it wants to install... so I could choose (for instance, I do not want to install IE 8 yet). Is there a way to determine which updates windows wants to install, now that it is in this mode?

    Thanks!

Food for thought-> thw majority of updates come out on "Update Tuesday." (second tuesday of the month)

Wait a couple days after that and manually check for updates and have complete control;)

From time to time MS force updates on you regardless of the Update setting. Recent Article in Windows Secrets.
