I need to purchase a new internal hard drive strictly as a slave drive for backups and storage of data. My current C: drive is a Seagate ST360015A Parallel ATA100 drive. I am not concerned about speed, performance etc. just backup of the C drive with Acronis.

I find all the new HDD specs such as SATA I, SATA II etc confusing. I think I need a EIDE ATA100 drive to match my current system.

I have found the following drive on Amazon, will it work OK as a slave drive?

    Western Digital 320 GB Caviar SE16 Eide ATA100 7200RPM 8MB 3.5IN 100MB/S

It'll be fine as a slave but to be honest you will probably be better using this as the master/only drive. Your seagate and maxtor are quite small but you could consider buying external cases and using them for backup purposes.

Hi wildfire, thanks for the comments. I just might take your advice and clone the Seagate C drive to the new one and make it the C drive. The Maxtor no longer exists, it failed a month or so ago (forgot to remove it from the specs). I just used it as a backup which is what I want to do with the new drive.

At the moment the Seagate is a 60GB with only 17GB used so storage space is not a problem.

    Thanks again.

    Will call this thread resolved.

    Followup

Back again just for a followup on what transpired. I got the new HDD from Amazon (3 days delivery:D ). I installed as Primary Slave and cloned the existing C drive to it with Acronis. Reinstalled as Primary Master, booted just fine, all OS and Programs are there and working.

Reinstalled the old C drive as Primary Slave D:, BIOS saw the drive, but computer wouldn't boot past the first boot screen, just locked up and told me "problem with HDD "

Remembered hearing somewhere that two drives with OS's on the same cable may cause problems, so put the old drive on as Secondary Slave to the CD-ROM. Booted just fine and now all is well, I am a happy camper:):). Both drives are present in Explorer and accessible. I have backed up the new drive onto the old one with Acronis but for now have left the OS on it.

Will run with the new C drive for a few days or a week just to make sure it's A-OK and then will format the old drive for backups.

Will re-mark this thread as resolved in a day or so in case anyone has a comment.
