Wow. Interesting. I thought it was real important to keep the updates up to date. You both honestly mean it that I can just let this ride and wait for the SP2 to come out? And that is happening soon? Ok. You guys are the experts. ;)

Thanks for all the help and have a good weekend.

    :)

Your Welcome Panda. Glad I could help you out. It is very important to keep Windows up to date but if a service pack is going to be released anyway that contains all the previous updates then you can just wait for SP2 to be released. Windows Vista SP2 should be released in the next month or so. You will just have to hang in there until then.

Windows Update Still Won't Work RE: SP2

Last month I came here with a problem about windows update not working. This is the link that explains about it http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-vista/83962-windows-wont-update-2.html. Today I installed the SP2 and the problem still exists. It can't update and my Windows Defender still won't update, either. Not sure where to go from here. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

    :)

Only suggestion I have is to do a "repair" install of Vista.

You can do this by running your Vista DVD & choosing to "upgrade" your current installation.

Now there's one thing you'd need to keep in mind:

If you have installed Vista Service Pack 1 and your original Vista DVD does not include this Service Pack, then the Upgrade option will be disabled. If that is the case you will need to Uninstall Service Pack 1 from your PC prior to attempting the upgrade.

SP1 should be listed as Service pack for Microsoft Windows (KB936330) in View Installed Updates from Programs and Features.

Thanks for jumping in so fast.

If I understand you correctly, if I had to download and install SP1 when I first got this computer then it would show up in my installed updates list, right? The only SP update I see is the one from today. It doesn't even say SP2. It just says Service Pack MS for Windows (KB948465). But when I check my properties it does say SP2.

So, you are saying it's a simple matter of putting in the CD, clicking the option to upgrade and following the prompts? Is this going to mess up any personal changes to my computer or any other downloads and updates from other programs? I know I should know this answer, but have to ask it any way.

Realllllllly.....realllllly don't want to do this! LOL.

Just pulled the disc out and it says OPERATING SYSTEM DISC. Is this it? Then off to the side it says "INSERT DISC, RESTART COMPUTER, FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS." Then under that it says "WARNING: THIS PROCESS ERASES ALL DATA..." yikes!

    :)

Outch! So you have an OEM system with a 'restore' type disk it seems.

Sorry, I'm all out of ideas.

You may want to start a free Windows Update support incident request: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527

    Last Update

I thought it might be a good idea to at least let everyone know what transpired with my contact with MS tech support. The following are things he asked me to do and what I did with it. After each thing I did, I rebooted the computer. I'll try to make this short.

    1. He had me go to SERVICES.MSC. Checked WINDOWS UPDATE STARTUP TYPE and BACKGROUND INTELLIGENT TRANSFER SERVICE. After stopping /starting them, I rebooted. No fix.

    2. We renamed the WINDOWS UPDATE SOFWAREDISTRIBUTION FOLDER. No fix.

    3. He then requested SYSTEM info and the WINDOWSUPDATE.LOG file. I sent them to him.

    4. He came back and said, yes, you definitely have many error scripts. “2009-07-16 17:16:42:934 1104 a48 Report REPORT EVENT: {040FDA17-74ED-431C-968F-89E27C0F2E1E} 2009-07-16 17:16:37:934-0400 1 161 101 {E2FF4526-97D7-4926-8E75-295DBA39C6BF} 1 8007007a SelfUpdate Failure Content Download Error: Download failed.†We then uninstalled my Avast and downloaded the SYSTEM UPDATE READINESS TOOL. When I tried to run it I got an error "no such interface supported" so I couldn't run that test.

    5. He then wanted the CHECKSUR.LOG file, but I couldn't find it. I was able to send the SFCDETAILS.TXT file to him, though. No fix.

    6. After all this he said we were going to have to do an IN-PLACE UPGRADE. I then told him I didn't have the original CD for the computer because Gateway never gave me one. He talked to his boss and they ended up sending me one, FREE! I turned off the WINDOWS FEATURES as requested and ran the disc. Sigh. :( No fix.

There were several interesting things, though. Even though, when I try to run windows update, I still get the error, BUT, the next day after doing the In-Place Upgrade, when I went to shut the computer down, the icon was lit that says, "click to install updates and then shut down." So, it's getting the updates which actually show up in my history, but I can't seem to get rid of the icon in my task bar that says, "you have updates." Oh. I also had to reinstall my sound after the upgrade. When I went back to tech support and told him all that had happened he suggested that I need to REINSTALL VISTA!!!!!! I told him I was going to search some more online before I did that! I really, really, REALLY don't want to do that.

So. That is the history. That is where I sit now. I think we are done here unless anyone has any other ideas.....

Thanks for listening and helping where you could.

    :)

Your Welcome, Panda. When I had Vista I had the very same issue with Windows Updates not being installed. I was able to get Windows Updates to install by performing an In-Place Upgrade like what you did and in my case the upgrade actually resolved my issue. Vista turned out to be a huge hassle to deal with so I downgraded and went back to XP. I am sorry to hear that desipte all those steps that you went through you still weren't able to get your issue resolved. :( I hope you will be able to find a resolution eventually. :)
