So this is a pretty easy problem to get around, seeing as I just did. But the situation here is that when I tried booting my computer with my iPod and Western Digital HDD, the system's first screen popped up and loaded, but then when it went to the black screen with the white underscore, it just stayed there rather than quickly moving on to the next loading screen. I check the forums for possible solutions before giving up and unplugging my HDD. I turned my computer off, and the booted it back up. Same thing. I then unplugged my iPod and rebooted. Worked like a charm. After logging in, I plugged my devices back in, and they work normally. The problem though, is that I don't know why my iPod or HDD would possibly cause my computer not to start. I've booted with them before. Sure, I could just unplug and replug at each boot, but that will soon get tiresome when having to restart constantly for updates and such. Soo I was wondering if anyone else had some insight on this problem. I have Windows XP.

Apparently some recent MS update has caused a problem with USB connected devices. Other have reported similar problems. I suggest you try uninstalling the latest updates. If that fixes the problem, refuse them until MS resolves the issue.

Strangely during the black screen, my mouse lit up as though it were properly working. My printer was also connected, and the computer booted fine with them both connected. Idk if it's got anything to do with them being connected to the USB ports on the back of my computer...either way, I'm glad to have found a temp. solution. Thanks for the info surferdude2.
