I ran Norton Utilities WinDr & the folowing problem was found:

The key: CLSID\{1171A62F-05D2-11D1-83FC-00A0C9089C5A}\InprocServer32," refers to a missing file, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash6
    .ocx

I Googled it & it would seem that the latest Adobe Flash Player would fix it. The latest being Flash10.

It took quite awhile to get to this download & after starting went on to downloading a strangely large file in excess of 80mb, where the size of Flash10 indicated on the Adobe download page was only 1.87mb.

It was not possible to ascertain exactly what was being downloaded, so I stopped this huge mysterious download.

Any help with any of the above will be much appreciated

(WinXPHome; SP3; all upto date) Intermediate +(not hi-tek)

My apologies, the registry problem is resolved, though would like to put right even though not necessary.
Still not able to easily download Flash Player10, Adobe Download Manager already installed & seemingly wants to download far more that the 1.87mbs.
I am using a data card/modem & can see the mbs being downloaded, goes on & on - I only stopped the previous download at 80mbs because it didn't make sense, I didn't know what it was & may well have been considerably more! Thanks

I have just tried to download FlashPlayer10 again after re-uninstalling with the Uninstaller, but the Installer still wants to download what is in excess of 20mbs, before I cancelled it again.
The thin green line indicating installation progress seemd complete at 100%, but the larger green line below stopped at 100% then continued with a smaller green line right off the Installer window - very confused!
