Neighbor lady gave me an old emachine w4885 that quit working and got very hot. I don't know anything about them but I took the side off and it was full of dust bunnies and cat hair. Fans were completely clogged. Reversed the vacuum cleaner and blew it out. Took it to our teeny PC shop and he reinstalled windows xp, sold me a new fan and replaced a little round battery.

Asked him about the memory (2 slots with 1 512 stick) and he thought the slots had to be balanced?. (Nice young fellow just out of school) I just need 1 1G in there with the 512 but he thinks they need to be 2 512s or 2 1gigs? It's ddr memory so thought I'd ask if I need the other 1gig ($50) stick. If not, does it make any difference which slot gets which stick?

    Chas

    P.S. The machine runs great.

The young man is thinking of dual channel memory which most, if not all modern boards are capable of running. This involves running a matched pair of modules for optimum performance. Some boards now run triple channel memory where the memory is installed in banks of 3 matching modules.

That said your board will run very happily with a 1 Gb and a 512 Mb stick - see screen shot from Crucial.

If you run through their memory selector it will show which memory is compatible with your computer.
