Right click, Save Link As worked fine in 3.0 and "Save Target As" works fine in IE, but it does not work for me in FireFox 3.5

It will pop up the save prompt with file type being "Firefox Document" and name "url" and produces a useless ~500 byte file.

I search for a PDF document. Sometimes I have trouble opening it, so I'd like to download, then open it. Now, I'm not able to do it.

    This is what happens:

    Anyone else???

    Hi AdderallXP,

[NOTE* I use Foxit rather than adobe so my comp behavior may differ]

I don't fully understand why the url acts like it does. My guess is the way it is scripted to be called up, in this case to be viewed in browser using pdf plugin. I have the same problem and similar result. The difference is my choice is url and html. Below are some work arounds, if you wish to avoid opening this/these in browser.

A work around would be highlighting the actual pdf link as seen at the bottom:
h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00212209.pdf and right click select search using google, or copy and paste this into google. Any link from that search can be right clicked saved as pdf.

Or do an advanced google search and set preference to search only for pdf.

It will be interesting to hear why this happens.....;)

You could give this a shot:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636

I just tried it and it worked. See:
    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/3730/captureykp.png

Note* at the bottom of this link were a few comments made by users of this plugin. They weren't impressed. I will keep these in mind and should I notice odd behaviors in firefox while working with pdf in the future, this plugin will be the first to go.

I think that the problem is that the file is saved as a "Firefox document ". Check the dro down for other choice. Is there an Adobe document?
I have no problem viewing in Firefox3.5.2.

I'm using Firefox 3.52 and no problem here either. You might want to try uninstalling Adobe and reinstalling to the latest release. Or try Foxit Reader

    Hi guys (Westside and runner),

    Confirm please:
    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=Maintenance+and+Service+Guide&btnG=Google+Search&fp=1&cad=b

When you right click on the first three of the links on the above google hit list, named "Maintenance and Service Guide" and select "save as ", "*.pdf" is an option, for you?

    -------------------------
    To AdderallXP,

Open firefox tools>options>applications button> do you have "always ask" as the option set for either pdf, adobe document or (as in my case foxit reader document). Once I set this as option, the link now asks if I want to "open" or "save it" and will do so, by passing browser plugin and using the extension *.pdf. If I want browser/pdf integration that also is an option in the dropdown action list. You may wish to check this out and see what your choices are.

What version Adobe and what version FF do you use? I updated FF from 3.0 to 3.5, but at about the same time, I updated Adobe Acrobat too.

I'm not sure which, or if they worked synergetically to cause it, but it was working fine before.

The problem with copy and pasting from the bottom is that it only works for short links.

For longer links, it'll be truncated and shown as xxxx.....xx.pdf
When you actually right click the like and copy the link, it actually morphs into a really long line in Google.

I usually open it and view, but sometimes large files cause the CPU usage to rise to 100% and lock up the reader until the file is completely downloaded, so I worked around it by doing "Save As" then opening it locally.

I disabled the Adobe reader plug-in and now, when I left click it, it'll prompt me for what to do and I can save it.

Even with the plug-in disabled right click Save-As always results in the pop up with the file pre-named "url" and two available options being "Firefox document" and "All files "(well, after updating to 3.52) What you actually get is a file named "url.pdf" that is completely useless.

I have this problem on two computers. Both running Windows XP SP3, Firefox 3.52

I've also already ruled out Firefox profile. I created a brand new user profile for testing purpose and same exact thing.

    Hi Adderallxp,

I use Firefox 3.5.2 and Foxit Reader available here.

Also Windows 7 and IE8, neither of which have anything to do with the current topic but I threw those stats in just 'cause. ;)

As explained I have the same results for some occasional links to pdf files. I use the work arounds provided, any one will do, depending on my mood, if I need the pdf and what I'm doing at the time.

The more permanent work arounds were the options>application tab, default action setting for "how I want Firefox to handle pdf documents ", or the plugin suggested in a previous thread and once again, below.

Beyond the above, I have no knowledgeable reason why this occurs, just a guess, also previously given. I was waiting for someone to share that pearl of wisdom and make us all a little richer. :D
