I was fine until 2 months ago. I haven't downloaded any software. Im running Vista sp1. I've downloaded and reinstalled MSDirect X twice. I've triple checked all my settings.

When I insert a cd, Windows Media Player and Itunes will play the first one (1) minute of the first song on the cd just fine, then stop, and run through the rest of the songs marking them with a red "X ". I cant rip, burn or play in any of the formats.

In WMA, I get this error message:

Windows Media Player cannot read the CD. The disc might be dirty or damaged. Turn on error correction, and then try again.

I've turned on error correction, tried many cds that all play on my other pc just fine.

Im totally frustrated and at a loss as to what the hell has happened. Can anyone help me please?

    Thank you in advance.........

Gave it a try boni, and nadda. I did notice in WMP, that when it stops playing at one (1) minute, that at the bottom of the player, it says "media changing" when it stops playing! Itunes doesn't work either. Thank you for the try however. Have a wonderful day broni, and let me know if you have any other tricks to try!

There is a good chance, the drive may be going south.

PS. I tried inserting a DVD to see. It played fine. Its just cds Im having the problem with.

I Googled Vista "Windows Media Player cannot read the CD. The disc might be dirty or damaged. " and discovered several other people on the 'net have/had similar issues.

One 1-year-old resolved thread states NVIDIA "chipset" driver was at the heart of the issue. Here is a longer thread in a different forum about the same issue (by the same poster).

Here's another where the culprit apparently was, again, NVIDIA drivers (appears to be "nForce" drivers in this case).

However, since you apparently have not made any recent changes, updating/reverting nVidia drivers may not work for you. I have yet not found other resolved threads about your issue.

Here's a current thread at Microsoft forums about an issue that produces a similar error message but deals with ripping CDs instead of playing CDs.

EDIT: Here's another thread regarding NVIDIA and, specifically,
One more at the HP Support Forums implicating NVIDIA drivers and also mentioning SATA CD drive controller.

Mailman: Thank you for taking the time to post those threads! I updated the NVDIA chipset drivers and that did the trick! Thank you so so much for taking the time! Its greatly appreciated!

I used CPU-Z to find the current version Im using. (5.04) 8/10/2007

Then went to NVDIA and updated the motherboard drivers. The newest version is (10.0).

    Life is good once more......

    Best,
