Hello: on my wife's XPsp3Pro her up arrow brings back the last command line in the command prompt window, like linux/mac/unix. My XPsp3Pro doesn't (have an active up arrow in CLI. Is there a minor install/command I can do to get that going? Thank you.

larkin,

After you open your command prompt window, right-click on it's title bar and select "Defaults ". Then compare to your wife's command prompt window defaults.

I'm guessing the "Command History" settings may not match.

Never tried that mallman.

What larkin is looking for is right there.

Right clicked - properties -and checked Quick Edit Mode under Edit Options.

Hi, the "quick edit" checkbox is greyed out. While I think this is an admin acct., I'll login as "admin" (not this acct.'s name) & see if this is an admin issue. I'll need to check my wife's pc too. Thank you.

& if I can't get the up arrow (yeah, it's in w2k too), the workaround ephremarial sent (thanks) will have to do.

The "Quick Edit mode" is not grayed out for me and I don't need it enabled for my "DOSKEY-like" functionality (with the up/down arrows) to work either. (BTW, my OS is XP Home SP3 in case that turns out to be a variable.)

A possible workaround...

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories
2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Properties
3. Under the General tab edit the Target path, append /k doskey at the end so it displays as
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /k doskey
4. You might also define Shortcut key such as "Ctrl+Shift+C" to make it easy to open a command prompt window without hunting.
