Ok, so my parents gave me this old Windows XP Home Edition to fix up. The original problem was that both fans (Power Unit and major fan) failed and the computer would shut down almost immediatly due to a thermal event. I open the computer up and cleaned out all the dust and stuff. I booted up the computer and both the fans worked (they only work when the computer is popped open, if I close the case they both turn off). I logged into an account (not administrator) and immediatly started Disc Cleanup. I checked all the boxes, started it, and went to bed with the computer on (I accidenatlly left the computer on my carpet). I wake up to find out that the computer shut down in the middle of the night due to a thermal event (this has happened about a million times before with no damage). I turn on the computer and I get this message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable any components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical Information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000074 (0x00000003, 0x00000002, 0x80088000, 0xc000014c)

Ok, so I am pretty sure it is NOT my RAM because I have two stick of 512Mb which, I have taken out one at a time and switched and they BOTH get the blue screen error. I got two more sticks of RAM from my friend which where the same type with 1Gb, and both of them STILL didn't work. I cannot access BIOs and I cannot get into Safe Mode. If I try to enter Safe Mode I get the same blue screen error! I also can't boot off of CDs or USBs!

I WAS able to run a Hard Drive Diagnostic and I got the following:

Hard drive diagnostics running, please wait...
    Drive 0: WDC WD1600JD-75HBB0 - Pass

    Drive 1: _NEC DVD+/-RW ND-6500A - Diagnostics not supported

Diagnostics complete, Press <ENTER> to reboot

So it appears that Drive 1 appears to be failing me? What is Drive 1? Can I ever solve this problem? Please help!

    Thank you! :)

    Nope, wrong conclusion.

Your Drive 1 is an optical drive, not a hard drive, so HD diagnostics won't run on it!

I'd start with a Windows XP Repair install, hopefully you have your XP installation disk.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

Ok I got the computer to boot and it seems to be running normally. I did not boot with internet so I still need the proper drivers and patches. I have a new question now though. So I have opened every component and have either blown out or vaccumed up the dust. Both my fans work but they are still REALLY loud? Any ideas?

Ok then, do you know where I can buy new fans (for the big fan inside and the smaller one in the power unit)? Also, do you know where I can buy an internet receiver (I have wireless internet, but I need to buy a receiver so I can get internet on my other computer)? I need one of the purple-blue boxes with an antenna. Thank you!

Purple-blue? Sounds like a Linksys box...?

For hardware, like fans, I like to shop online at places like Tiger Direct and NewEgg. They usually have good hardware at really good prices. Just make sure you're getting the right sized fan.

If you already have wireless internet, you sould only need a wireless network card, and not a whole "box" (you make it sound like you need a router, but you don't, if you already have wireless internet installed in your home).

That's just based on what you said... Can you give better descriptions of the equipment already installed to your network for wireless internet?

I just bought a Linsys USB internet receiver so I am talking to you from my computer im fixing up. I haven't got new fans yet, but I have another question. For some reason, my computer isn't detecting that I have speakers plugged in? I have them plugged in to the appropriate green outlet in the back, they just aren't working? They work with my iPod? Any ideas? Thanks!

blue screen is a way the system is protecting itself... Your hard disk is not crashed... delete the patition an install a fresh os on a raw disk space... when completed.. ran a local disk scan to recovering bad sector.... this will help

How do I get to device manager? I ran a whole search of the computer and cannot find it. Also, if I am missing my audio driver, how would I get it?

I have no device manager button. All I see is a list of hardware, then the buttons Properties, Troubleshoot..., Cancel, Apply, and OK. I did update drivers for all the hardware and it says they are all up to date. I still have no sound. Any other ideas?

The Device manager windows will read Computer Management on the title bar.
When you can view the Device list with their icons look for the one with a yellow question mark ? other devices
Follow on with two more question mark "“ reading [-multimedia Audio Controller
    [Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

If you can notice this then you check you mother board and see its model (Eg: Aopen or ASUS or FOX CONN… Find the Mother drives and install that will help…. If you still having the same problem with your computer then you have a hard ware problem… check you connection or replace you speaker…

    Have fun..
