Resolved Logon without Password

    My computer was set up so that I could set up so I could push the button on the tower and walkaway and get my coffee and when I came back my computer was booted up & ready to use.

    I was working with my laptop yesterday trying to set up a home netork and was having router etc. problems.

    Now today when I click on the computer things have been changed and I get a box that I have to check OK and then the computer will continue booting up.

    I went to MS support and found an Article # 315231 (see below) and followed only the instructions for not using the password WITHOUT going into the registry--and that only made things worse--now when I attempt to logon it asks me for my password and I type in the one I just set up in Article ID 315231--it won't take it and then I pushed OPTIONs box and then OK and it completly changed my desktop---I went to System Restore & I now can get my desktop & everything back to normal but I still cannot Logon without that box asking me for my password that it wont take then I hit OK and it continues booting up.

    I would like to be able to have it do like it did in the past and boot up & login without any password.

    This is the article I followed from MS I used.

    Click Start, and then click Run.
    In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.

    Note When users try to display help information in the User Accounts window in Windows XP Home Edition, the help information is not displayed. Additionally, users receive the following error message:
    Cannot find the Drive:\Windows\System32\users.hlp Help file. Check to see that the file exists on your hard disk drive. If it does not exist, you must reinstall it.
    Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click Apply.
    In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
    Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to close the User Accounts window.

    Password help is very limited on this forum.
    You seem to have XP Home, go into Msconfig (System Configuration Utility) and click on the Boot.Ini tab, put a check next to SafeBoot. Restart the computer and let it boot into Safe Mode. Log on as the Administrator, then go into Control Panel, choose User Accounts and remove the password for your account.
    Go back into Msconfig and uncheck the SafeBoot option, and reboot.
    If this doesn't help, sorry.

    Did you happen to install a Netgear router?

    Thanks Mark--first thing I am running Win XP Pro--

    I did what you suggested but their wasn't a Password list under my Administrator Account (which is the only account on my computer) so I created one--and then went and removed it--

    while clicking on different options under USER ACCOUNTS I get a message pop-up that state--

    "Client Services for Netware has disabled the welcome screen & faster user switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall Client Services for Netware "

    I don't have a clue what they are talking about and the suggestion you recommended did not work---I don't have to type a password in the box when it appears but I still have to click on OK.

    Any more ideas?

    I think TweakUI is the easiest way.

    That and other methods are outlined HERE. As you have already found, some of them aren't as productive as we might like. ;)

    Thank you Mark & Super Dude for your help.

    This is what I did to resolve my dilemma and bring back my logon on without doing anything but pushing the button on the tower.


    A. Many readers have inquired about uninstalling the Client Services for Netware component, particularly to enable Windows XP's fast user-switching capability. Follow these steps to remove the Client Services for Netware component:


    Open Network Connections (Start, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections).
    Right-click your connection (e.g., Local Area Connection) and select Properties.
    Under "This connection uses the following items:" select "Client Services for Netware" and click Uninstall.
    Click Yes to the displayed dialog box and reboot



    And I know I brought this problem on myself because yesterday when I was messing around trying to set up a network I remember somehow ending up at that "Client Services for Network" option & clicking on INSTALL--after all these years I ain't still mastered the art of --- "Don't click on it when you don't know what's gonna happen "

    Once again Thank Guys & I still say this is the best HELP FORUM on the block.
