    Hi,
I have had several problems since I tried to install a trial version of Photoshop CS4 on my pc, OS Windows xp Home Edition. I was unable to install it, I received a message saying 'jscript needs to be reregistered' when I tried to install.
Since then, the Search window is blank, System Restore the same, Outlook Express opening page also, and parts of Facebook, Youtube and other sites don't display/work.

    I found this
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/831430

and have tried the first part of Method 1 steps 1, 2, 3, which return an error message 0x80004005.

I have started to follow on with the rest of Method 1 but I am lost at steps 5 and 6 as below -

<In the Restore from box, type the path of the Windows XP .cab file where you want to restore the file, or click Browse From to locate the Windows XP .cab file.

Note The Windows XP .cab files are stored in the I386 folder on the Windows XP CD.
In the Save file in box, type the path where you want to extract the new file, or click Browse To to locate the folder that you want.>

Does this mean that I need my Windows XP CD in the pc when I attempt to do this step? Is the 1386 folder 'the path' they mention? And where do I need to 'extract the new file'?

I hope someone can help with this, thanks in advance :)

    Hi ydal,

Perhaps my answers in this past post will help see thread #4 and the links provided within that thread:
    http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/48689-search-file-folder-not-working.html#post261556

The only addition I would make within this thread is the scripting download from Microsoft. It's for version 5.6 the link for 5.7 is here:
Windows Script 5.7 for Windows XP

    The error
your having may also have something to do with a lowered rights or permission issues. You must have administrator rights and permissions, let's see if running a handy tool will help to fix this:

    >Download "dial a fix" and under the icon that looks like a hammer, run "repair permissions" and "reset WMI/WBEM" (last one is probably unrelated).

    >Check everything under the "registration center" on the main program screen and run that.

    Hi Goddez

Thanks for your quick response :)

    1) Forgot to mention I am already up-to-date with Windows Script 5.7, found that tip elsewhere.

    2) I'm not sure it's a problem with lowered rights or permission, as the other 2 run commands on the list worked fine, it was only the regsvr32jscript.dll which returned the error? *(See if registering these dlls help, from Start>Run type and enter each:

    regsvr32 jscript.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll
    Regsvr32 vbscript.dll )

    3) Dial-a-Fix sounded great but comes up with a small box saying

' Dial-a-fix was unable to determine your version of Internet Explorer.
Certain dll registrations will be skipped. Please email.....'

    Shall I do that?

    Thanks.

Sorry, I just realised after I left that post I could still run the dial-a-fix Registry section - it came up with the same code I got when trying the run command regsvr32 jscript.dll and says 'this object might be corrupted' - try SFC purge/cache and SFC scannow in the Tools dialogue or try to find a replacement for this file.
And another mention of corrupted or unregistrable file (Error 127; C/WINDOWS/System32/iesetup.dll) - tells me my version of iesetup and asks me to contact them so 'an exception can be made for my version of this file)

It has found several files like this now - I only paid for a re-format of this pc a few months back :(

    I'll see what happens next!

    Hello again ydal,

What version of IE are you using? Barring a "dial-a-fix version/IE version" incompatibility, it sounds like IE maybe problematic and needs to be uninstalled repaired or reinstalled. Let me double check into this version of dial-a-fix and see if it has any issues with IE8. It's been a while since I did a studyup on it.

Just make sure to read the wiki link, I provided earlier, "CAREFULLY" and be sure you've also read sublinks, particularly:
    http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix_tips
Dial-A-Fix is considered a work in progress and can be a great tool but it is "A WORK IN PROGRESS ". Pay special attention to the "policies button" and fixes, (still puzzled and suspicious of your error message.)

Any change at all in all those blank appies?

Have you given any thought to using system restore and trying a restore point that predates the photoshop installation? Opps! What am I thinking? If it's still blank or problematic of course you can't use it, sorry, how stupid am I?

I was hoping this problem would be behind you with my previous threads but it sure looks like I may need a bit more time so I can check into any known Photoshop install/uninstall issues. Since the problem started with this sucker I may have to take a closer look into it.

How sure are you that your not infected with some dirty little malware/viral critter? I know that this is a finger that everyone waggles but unfortunately, to often and sadly, now day's, it turns out to be justly waggled.

Just for grins and giggles, please open ie options and make sure security settings are at default and you are not using higher than normal or customized settings.

Yes, you would need the CD in the PC when doing that step, unless you have the entire I386 folder copied from the CD onto your harddrive.

Is the 1386 folder 'the path' they mention?
A 'path' is series of folders you go through to access the file you are looking for, such as C:\Windows\System32 or C:\Programs Files\Ahead\Nero.

And where do I need to 'extract the new file'?
    C:\Windows\System32

I really think you should run sfc /scannow to repair IE and replace any corrupted files you definitely have.

    Hi Goddez and Mark

ok I ran it, it requested my WindowsXP CD, and after that all seemed to go smoothly - restarted pc but no return of the missing dialogue boxes.

I had already checked everything Goddez said, discovered I'm running IE8 so that's why dialafix didn't work I guess...

!!!!had a brainwave and retried the command regsvr32 jscript.dll in Run dialogue box.

Hey Presto!! All missing dialogues returned :):)

Only apparent remaining issue is that Facebook and many other sites are now crashing when using IE8 (one of the sites being this one!!)

So I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and they don't crash (yet??)

Should I leave it all as it is now or try to discover what's up with IE8?

Thanks for your help so far :D

    Hi ydal,

Yahoo! I see you've made progress. With the help of mark62s advice, you have actually done the wisest thing by running sfc. After reading tons of adobe knowledge base articles on botched install/uninstall problems, I had come to the same conclusion in that either windows software/files or registry problems went hand in hand with this. The initial problem most likely went deeper than a jscript snafu. Running sfc is where I was headed, I was just being a bit slower at it as I like to peck at a problem for a while. The challenge amuses me.

Isn't it amazing how clear hindsight is....:D

As for current IE8 problems, yes, you need to address any issues your facing as problems tend to snowball. It's best to catch em while they're small. You'll have to go to the appropriate forum for that, though, "Internet Explorer forum" and start a new post.

I'm glad your current "blank dialogue boxes" and regsrv32/jscript problems are over with. Be sure to make a restore point and backup the registry:
    http://www.winxptutor.com/regback.htm

Even with a crippled IE your still in a better place than you were. :)

Your most welcome and thank you for the current update. You've described yourself as a beginner and have done better than most who declare themselves having more experience. Pat your self on the back.

Ok I'm getting onto the Registry backup issue and Restore point. thanks for that too.

I didn't dare describe myself as more than a beginner - I did have to Google 'snafu' lol! But I have had a computer for 5 years, and being the only person in the house who is interested in fixing it rather than just using it, I have inevitably picked things up along the way!!

Thank goodness for the forums and people like you and Mark who are giving their time. :)

    Take care

    Sally:)
