    Hi,
I am using SeaMonkey. I am trying to install an external hard drive for a backup. It requires an update to flash player v9.0 or better. I downloaded the flash player for mozilla, firefox, netscape and it requires that seamonkey be closed when installing.

I have done a search on BBS and found several solutions some I have tried and some were Greek to me.

My question is am I left with uninstalling SeaMonkey and then trying to load Flash Player? Can I copy SeaMonkey to a flash drive and reload if this works? Do I need to uninstall Mozilla or are they one and the same?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

    TRoof

You don't have to uninstall SM, only close it for installation of the Flash Player.

Bill, I forgot to mention that the main problem with the install is the fact that when you have SeaMonkey closed including the quick launch it still thinks SeaMonkey is open. I have not found any where that SeaMonkey is open. This is a problem that most posters were having but no solutions seemed to work for me.

    Thanks

Hi Bill. This time I disabled the SM quick start altogether. I then shut everything down and rebooted as you suggested.

The quick launch icon was gone. I clicked on the flash player install icon (v10.xxxx). After the install was completed I then went to 'my computer' and clicked on the 'My Book' icon and then clicked on setup. I got this message. "To run this program, version 9 or greater of the Flash ActiveX control is needed. Would you like to install it now? If you don’t install it you can not run this program. " I clicked yes but still nothing. I am not sure but I think I read somewhere that ActiveX only pertained to IE. The Flash player I downloaded was only for Mozilla, firefox and netscape.

    Does not make sence.

    this link
is where you check to see if you have flash player installed.

This link is where to download the player.

this link is the place to go for troubleshooting adobe flash stuff.

I have had success in the past by running the flash uninstall program first.

    Flash uninstall link

Bill, the adobe site shows that flash player has been successfully installed with version 10,0,32,18 installed. Says them.

That is the same player that I have downloaded and I also have the uninstall player app and have uninstalled flash player before each new attempt.

I am going to try the SM uninstall next. Hope it solves things.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.

Do by any chance use "NoScript "? Sites will say you don't have the player installed if noscript is blocking.

I'm not familiar with sea monkey. I use Firefox and it provides a way to start with no extensions installed. It' called Safe Mode. Does Seamonkey have the same? If so, that would eliminate extensions causing the problem.

How about IE. Does the flash content play on the site using IE?

I am not sure what "NoScript" is. Also I am not sure if SM has a safe mode. It would seem that it would.

Here are some things that I tried since last time.

I have verified via the Adobe site that v10.0.32.18 is installed on my computer.

I uninstalled Flash Player then reinstalled it again. No change

I have gone the uninstall SM route. I no longer got the "close SM" message but when I click on the setup icon for the external hd I still get the message that I need "version 9 or greater of the Flash Active X control to run this program"

Aparently IE wasn't able to make the thing work either. Without SM installed i only had IE as my browser which changed nothing.

Could the problem be with the new external drive??????

When I get a chance I will try it on another computer.

When you go to the Adobe Flash site and the box is full of dancing, moving video and audio, then it is installed on your system and works for the browser you are using.

I don't understand what flash has to do with installing a new external drive....I have installed external USB drives with no mention of flash. Is this stuff happening when you plug in the drive? Have you formatted and partitioned your new drive?

does the flash work without trying to install a new drive? What sort of drive is it?

Hi again. Gave up on installing the external hard drive for awhile. Have not given up though.

Since the last post I have tried several things. Basicly I started over. I uninstalled the flash player on my computer and went to Adobe and down loaded the latest viersion of FP again. I then went to the control panel and removed Mozilla / Seamonkey which I did after saving them to a flash drive. I removed the flash drive and put in a safe place. I then restarted my computer. I no longer had the "close seamonkey" message.

I then hooked up the usb from the external HD to my computer. I then went to My Computer and clicked on the My Book icon and then setup. Guess what? I still get the message that a version of FP 9 or newer has to be installed in order to set up the external hard drive.

I am thinking of going to the ye ole computer shop as my final attempt at getting my back up working. Totally out of DIY ideas.

I do have SeaMonkey reinstalled so no additional problems there.

If it does get taken care of I will post back the reason for all this agony. Until then...... Thanks TRoof

I am, still, havingproblems understanding what you want to do. I will try to summarize what I think is your situation. You have Flash and Seamonkey installed in the main, computer C drive. The external drive is on a different drive, and is anything installed in it? I have a thumb drive which has Firefox and Thunderbird installed (pretty much equivalent to SM). I have no problems with Flash. I know nothing about My Book. How is it run. I will do a Search, and, may be we can make some sense out of this. Uninstalling SM out of the C drive is pointless.

My Book is an external USB HDD from Western Digital.
I have it in the 250 gb size that I use for my Firefox and Thunderbird profiles among other things.

    Hi Guys,

Good news! My external HD is functioning as it is supposed to be. After my last try of removing all traces of Sea Monkey and then still being told by the Flash Player program that I still needed to have v9 or newer to run the program even after I installed the latest version of Flash Player I kinda walked away from it and thought I would have to take it to Ye Ole Computer Shoppe.

Well the next day I decided to give it one more try so I attatched the USB cable from the external hard drive to my computer and lo and behold the splash screen for My Book appeared and I proceeded to continue through the set up process. Anyhow everything seems to be working just fine but I have no idea why.

I think the Flash Player is needed for the add ons that come as 30 day free trial they wish to sell you. I think this was the point where it was asking for the v9 or newer part. In reality I found out that once I got through the "Close Sea Monkey" part I could have ignored the newer Flash Player part and opened the My Book app in My Computer and started backing up my files by simply dragging and dropping to My Book. The SM issue was the major glitch in my inability to load My Book successfully.

Thank you all for having someone around to help me beat this thing into submission. Windows BBS is the greatest TRoof

I don't even know what "My Book" is.

But, I do know this:.... With an external H/D the only backup program to use is "Second Copy "

I believe this because you can schedule one file or all of them to be copied to any place on any drive at any time and the best part, it is a pure simply copy and you can restore any file, folder or whatever using plain old Windows Explorer.

It and Ghost are only Backup Programs I use and I consider "Second Copy" the most important program on my computer other then the OS.

Second Copy has other features like ZIP and for $29.95 it is worth a look see.

    My 2 Cents, Ray

I use SeaMonkey as default, along with Firefox, Flock, K-Meleon, KMLite, and IE 8. I use two external hard drives. I update Flash when nececssary. I have not seen these problems, but I admit I don't understand what he is stating as the problem.
