Resolved Computer Freezes - Drivers failed to load?

    Hello again, thanks for all your help today.

    Unfortunately the above instructions didn't work, I am still receiving the same error message. I'm thinking its something to do with running in Safe Mode, which is why the RPC server is not running.

    I seem to keep on hitting stumbling blocks every week with this problem.

    You may be right about Safe Mode - there are several hits on the Internet which suggest running SFC in Safe Mode, but the MS article makes no mention of the mode, only that you must be logged on as Administrator - or with Administrative rights to run SFC.

    I have tried to run SFC on my desktop in Safe Mode and receive the same message. Incidentally the RPC Service is running in Safe Mode.

    I am seeking further input on this from other BBS Team Members and others.

    I hesitate to recommend a Repair install of XP using your slipstreamed SP3 CD - it is possible, but as you have an OEM (Acer) version of the OS installed may not work - or may make matters worse.

    Please bear with me as I endeavour to get some more input into this.

    Implying that Last Known Good fails to work?

    Since you had Broni deal with a few matters I have avoided suggesting System Restore - that is my current suggestion although bear in mind that it may undo some/all of the changes Broni made. You need a restore point prior to the drivers failed to load situation.

    I haven't actually tried to roll back my computer to a last known good configuration yet. I've never actually had to use this feature before, so I was unsure.

    Is there a way to check the system restore points available before I actually try to roll the system back?

    You are confusing two different aspects here .....

    When you hit F8 to start in Safe Mode one of the options is 'Last Known Good'

    That is nothing to do with System Restore.
    Yes - when you run System Restore the second window presents a calendar listing the available restore points in bold - clicking on one gives you the detail in the right hand pane.

    Ah right, my apologies :eek:

    So, my next step would be to try and use the last known good configuration from the F8 options menu?

    Then, if that does not work and my computer still fails to boot properly, I will need to use System Restore?

    Oh dear - still having problems. :(

    I tried last known good configuration - and it didn't work.

    I also tried to load System Restore - and it wouldn't work. I keep continuing to receive the message that System Restore is turned off in safe mode and cannot be turned on etc.

    I tried to load System Restore using a Microsoft Article about Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and I recieved the same window message - it couldn't be turned on.

    So after some searching I found the following:

    So I attempted to follow the instructions posted by surferdude2, but I first received the message "Access Denied ". So I followed his other instructions about the system.bak file, but I received a message saying that a system.bak file already exists.

    And thats it, couldn't go any further. Stuck again. :confused:

    Are you sure that System Restore is enabled? ....

    Right click My Computer icon > Properties > System Restore
    Without a URL for that thread I can't check out what he said, but Access Denied may suggest that you are not logged on with Administrative rights.

    We are fast running out of options - my next and possibly final suggestion is to backup your data and make a repair install using the slipstreamed XP SP3 CD you made, but your COA number when asked to insert it. In theory a repair install loses no data, but has been known to go pear shaped. In any case you should always maintain a current backup of your data.

    Right, I continued to try and use a system restore point, but continued to receive errors and access denied warnings. I finally managed to gain access - disabling my ability to boot in safe mode - but I found that there was hardly any restore points available. In fact, only one - RP0 - which I couldn't do anything with.

    I have since made another slipstream XP SP3 cd because my other wouldn't boot properly. I have successfully managed to boot from the optical drive, but I have found that there is no option to perform a repair install - which from what i can gather was my final option.

    So now, I can either reinstall windows and lose all of my files and programs - or buy a new HDD with XP installed and rescue my files that way - but still losing vital programs like Office etc.

    Know of any retailers that have HDD with windows on them for a decent price? I have a 80gb hdd at the moment. Luckily, i get paid on friday.

    Please let me know.
    Unfortunately you cannot buy a hard drive with Windows installed - this has never been the case unless, of course, you are buying a new computer when Windows will be preinstalled by the manufacturer.

    Yes, I followed those instructions.

    However, when I get to the part when I choose which partition I want to setup Windows on there is no option to repair. I.e. when I select my C: drive, where my OS files are, pressing the R button makes no difference.

    That is, unless i first need to select the partition, then another screen comes up where I can select R to repair XP, but I have not seen this in any instructions I have come across.

    I think you are at the end of the line - your existing OS does not appear to be recognised maybe because it is an Acer OEM version.

    I think your only course of action now is a clean install for which you will need a retail copy of XP.

    I have now fixed my computer by installing a new hard drive, so I am now up and running again.
