System is in a boot loop ... put in CD and did a system repair. Still have the loop. Could the problem be in the bios and, hence, not be resolved by a complete re-install?? Am willing to re-install if it is necessary but have a lot of apps that would need to be re-installed.

You can disable that function by going to the Advanced Boot Menu via pressing the F8 key during or immediately following the POST screen.

I went to the advanced boot menu after pressing F8 but there is nothing there that refers to Automatic restart!

That option only shows if you have SP2 installed. :(

Chuck, Perhaps if you give more information about your system and what you were doing that might have brought this problem on, we can figure out something to help you.

Have you installed any new software, added any new hardware?? Shut down improperly??

Do you have a full retail XP CD? If so, boot to it and run chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console (first "R" option offered). Could help.

Did you have System Restore enabled when this problem was noticed?

    goddez1,

Finally,. after many attempts, got the screen you referrred to and chose "Disable automatic startup ". There is a great word in German for this: "Pusterkuchen "! Boot loop occurred again. Shut computer down and then restarted ... same!!

    Surferdude2d,
One thing I did do, after having trouble getting to the screen to enable Safe Mode several times, was to add line to Boot.ini to have Safe Mode another Startup option to list of available operating systems. (WinXP Inside Out pg 801). This worked once! But never got that far in subsequent boot ups.

Am ready to carry this PC back to a service center.

    Chuck :(

One thing I forgot to mention... I downloaded the Hitachi Driver Fitness Test and checked both hard drives from the CD. Both checked out fine!!
