    Cheers across the waves, Pete!

Thank you for showing me where to find the answer to the question about languages. I had indeed NOT allowed the installation of foreign languages when I checked the Control Panel Region and Language choice.

I like the idea of using my flashdrive to install the program from one computer to the other or using Firefox, but I still have the problem that I can't open links from Yahoo that take me to items on Ebay. So I have to go to Firefox to get to Yahoo to get my search results emails so I can click on the items and go to Ebay and view the details. IE just doesn't let me do that on my laptop, but DOEs on this desktop which is an old unit with old programs that have been dutifully updated.

    Dear Pete,

I responded to our last post, but don't see my response here.

In an earlier post I had said, "I downloaded it, but when I tried to installed it, I received an error message that said I needed to download an update and that I should click on the button to get that download. I was directed to Update for Windows XP (KB932823). I downloaded it, but when it attempted to install, I received an annoying message that said "Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update." The had an OK button to click which was my only option.

So, Pete, that is what my error message is. I download, but can't install. That's the problem for IE* ( I am using IE 7 on my laptop).

Does that help you understand my dilemma?

Yes - it seems that the wrong SP version is being detected. - What is the version number of Msctf.dll on your system?

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msctf.dll

Right click on the file > properties > version.

    It should be 5.1.2600.5512 (xpsp.080413-2105) dated 14/04/2008 for SP3

    Dear Pete,

Thank you for your continuing assistance.

The version is 5.1.2600.2180, not the number you gave.

    Now what do I do?

I'm babysitting 24/7 now for a 3-yr-old and a 21-month-old very energetic pair, so it isn't easy to get a moment when my Internet service will allow me to get online.

Thank you for your continuing patience.

I think we are both in the dark here now - it appears that your install of SP3 may not be complete or may be corrupted.

On that basis you could uninstall SP3 followed by IE7 and then reinstall SP3 followed by IE8, but I think you would be better off contacting Microsoft ......

Internet Explorer 8: Help and support ...
which would seem to cover your situation.

If you choose to do that I would be interested to hear of their response/solution.
