After downloading SP2 in vista, it seems my network connection to the internet has slowed down a bit to connect from a cold boot. I also noticed my Nortons is slower loading. I uninstalled Nortons to see if it was robbing my boot time but it didn't make any difference. Anyone got any suggestions as to why all of a sudden it takes longer to connect to the internet or an outside connection from a cold boot? It's like my access to the internet is slow to connect but after it connects it's business as usual. Any suggestions on speeding up access to the outside on boot up?

    Of course, check the cable/s.

Next I would go to the system manufacturer's website and get any updated network drivers (or make sure the original drivers disk was handy), then go to Device Manager, highlight and uninstall the listings under Network Adapters. The old/original drivers should be reinstalled automatically when you reboot, but you will have the updates to install if there does not seem to be an improvement.

I can't think of any other "slow network" reasons, but network drivers are a usual cause of slow startup/login.

Thanks, it's Intel, I'll check. Maybe a reinstall may help. I think I have the current drivers. It just has a lapse between the last program to boot, Nortons, and the connection to the internet. I'll try, thanks again.

Ok, so I go to Intel and download the latest drivers. This is the error message I get now:

Error 1713.Intel(R) Network Connections cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group. (I guess I'm at your mercy now).

Any ideas why I can't update my network connections?

Use the installer cleanup utility they talk about here
    http://www.appdeploy.com/msierrors/detail.asp?id=152

Try installing again, but it could be possible that they are the wrong drivers. You usually find the system manufacturer offers a few different drivers and you need to identify which one your actual model has (they will offer drivers for the system series). Usually you need to put the model number into a search, for example, Dell use a Service Tag number.

Look in Control Panel -> Programs and Features for an uninstaller for the old drivers. I would not hesitate to update Wireless drivers as well (if it has Wireless) because they can be involved.

That makes me think about the rest of the information in my link. If you have chosen a .msi installer file, look for the equivalent "Setup.exe" file. Although .msi files should(?) work, they are geared for network installations in an organisational environment.

So you turn on your computer and wait for the desktop and all other applications to finish loading....Is the desktop and other apps taking longer to load or it after that, that it takes longer..

Are we talking about an additional 12 to 19 seconds or 4 or 5 Minutes?

Seconds, I think it is more like 15 to 20. Almost like Nortons is scanning in the background before it allows a connection. I'm trying to see if that is the problem, however I did uninstall it to check and I couldn't tell any difference. I just don't understand why it takes longer right out of the blue (or after I installed some updates). Between loading my weather gadget and Nortons full boot icon in the taskbar, it just seems slower. I know it was booting much faster several weeks ago, I dunno...

Can you find a System Restore point that pre-dates the problem? Vista seems quite good at working with Restore Points. You could change back if there was no difference.

This all started after installing SP2 which made is OS "larger" for lack of better words.

Maybe there's something new that is running during the startup...Or maybe this is just the way it is now...

Food for thought: I hit the power button on my cofee maker - then the power button on my pc and then take a shower...PC seems to boot fast and fine when I'm not watching it:eek:

yep, I guess you may be right. SP2 is larger. I was hoping of another way. BTW, I checked my startup files, same programs but different sys files. I'm waiting for windows 7.

If it bugs you why not consider uninstalling SP2. (Seems you can use System Restore.)
How to uninstall Windows Vista service packs as a troubleshooting step

You don't need to install a Service Pack until you are forced to. Just get all the Important Windows Updates.

Install updated drivers and check for any software updates and then try installing it again.

I'm not getting SP2 any time soon. If you think it might "improve things ", it certainly won't make it work any faster. I avoid Service Packs for as long as I can, then update drivers, etc, before installing it.

Me, I would be concerned about that error message. Windows and Intel usually work hand-in-glove.

(My usual hint) If you have disabled UAC, try enabling it again.

My Vista (SP1) works like magic, I can't be happier with it. Boots up faster than any Win XP system I know.

Thanks Matt. UAC is enabled. Mine was booting fast, I still cannot figure this out. Today I noticed one of my storage drives, the TB, has an error and it will not allow me to run a scan. It says CHDSK is scheduled to run but it never does.

IMO Service Pack 2 is a significant change to the OS - and as such, I'm seeing lot's of issues with older drivers - both at work and online.

I'd suggest starting with your storage driver as the most likely candidate. Update it to the latest version available from the manufacturer of the controller/chipset (not from the system/mobo maker).

I'd also run a hard drive diagnostic just in case something is wrong there. Here's a link to a post of mine: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/bootable-hard-drive-diagnostics.html

I finally got my drives checked and no errors. I wasn't dismounting the drive using ckdsk but did and everything seems to be ok. I unloaded the network drivers and reload, actually vista reloaded the same files from Intel that was installed on their last update in April. I thought I was going to load the newer driver but Vista didn't give me the chance. I'm beginning to wonder if my weather gadget is slowing everything down or if it is throwing a red flag with Nortons. Problem is when the gadget actually appears, it's after my network connection appears to be connected. Maybe the gadget's code is slowing the access on startup? Idea's? I'll post my results. O, and the diagnostic info, many thanks.

It could be the Norton (that'd be my guess)
It could be the weather gadget
Or it could be the network drivers.

If the network driver didn't replace things, then uninstall the current network drivers from Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program. Then reboot (dismissing any "Found New Hardware" dialogs) and install the fresh download.

Try replacing the Norton with another antivirus to see if that's the issue.
I'd recommend this free one: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Then, download a copy of the new antivirus.
Uninstall the Norton using this free tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Install the new antivirus and immediately update it (so you're protected).

Mine hesitates loading Gadgets (probably the longest pause during startup) and I only have a few simple ones.

    Hi aintmisbehavinn,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

Can you tell me which Norton product and version you have installed? All 2009 Norton products are compatible with Windows Vista SP2, and since updates and scanning only run when your computer is idle, it should not affect system performance. If by chance you have any other real-time security software installed, you could be running into a software conflict.

Let me know which Norton product and version you are using and I can then assist you further in making sure that your settings are correct.

    Thank you,
    Mike
