Here is the datasheet on the Corsiar sticks for what it is worth (you'll see):

    Corsair TwinX 2048-3200C2PT

It clearly declares that 2-3-3-6 at 2.75v should be stable but at the mobo's stock bus speed of 200MHz! The website also has a test report on a similar mobo, the A8N32-SLI Deluxe:

    Test Report

Based upon the above and underscoring what Hawk said earlier (OC trade off), I lowered my CPU bus speed to stock 200MHz and the RAM ran fine at 400MHz, 2-3-3-6 as advertised. But I could only get my CPU bus speed up from 200MHz (1800 core speed) to 225MHz (2000 core speed) before the RAM failed. So, no can do both. I think it runs faster/smoother with the faster CPU core speed and the slower RAM. So, back it goes.

By the way, what should I do with the Memory Timing 1T/2T (stock at 2T), and the PCI Express Clock Speed (stock at 100MHz)?

Rock, I am holding off on the CMOS reset as doing it on my old, damaged mobo would be of no use. When this whole disaster started I remember you suggesting the CMOS reset and I found that my mobo had been set on pins 2 & 3 since it came out of the box factory fresh (3 years ago). Ahhhh, the good old days. :)

Larry have you increased the ram voltage at all, if not then I would suggest that you try increasing it in very small increments and see by how much you can increase your cpu bus speed. Do not change your Graphic card speed from 100MHz it would be best if you could lock it at that.

    Lar

Page 2-17 of your manual disagrees with you re: your CMOS jumper setting. It also says to pull the battery and jumper 2&3 to clear CMOS. Back to 1&2 to run. (The procedure I gave you is what I use for all boards except jumperless (some A-Open models) and its always worked for me. Bill has disagreed with this in Martinr's thread but that doesn't surprise me)

As to running PCIe Video in the lower slot - I never knew that it would only run at x1 - thanks for the heads up.

When you get the board you are going to run with, start at stock settings for the CPU, memory, video et al.

There is still some confusion as to speed here as your system bus is 2 x X with the capital X being 200 or 225 or whatever but you can also adjust memory frequency in relation to that bus speed with different ratios (asynchronous). Your other simple overclocking adjustment is the CPU multiplier which will not affect your video speed or your memory speed. When I gave you 400, I simply took a shortcut and looked at my manual setting on that sub-tab on my A8N SLI Premium Board which I have set manually. Your board's manual range is from 200-400 on that specific sub-tab. Your Corsair XMS is more than adequate memory but as you know, when OC'ing it all comes down to trial and error. I wouldn't waste any time until you get to the board you are going to use. And, lastly - those settings I gave you re: 3-3-3-8 were pulled out of my back pocket based solely upon experience and speculation. Its what I call "relaxing" your settings without altering the memory bus speed or frequency.

Lets wait until you get to the board you're going to use before we jump into this with both feet.

    Regards to all,
    ;)

Good morning to some, good day to all!!

Thanks for the insights... my lastest mobo has arrived. When I install it in the next day or two, first thing I will do is to reset the BIOS as discussed. Then I will install my video and audio cards and we'll see what happens. No hokey pokey settings yet. I'll post at that time.

    Thanks!!

Hi everyone (says Larry, powered by an EVGA 9800GT). :)

We are up and running without glitch. This new mobo looked like a new one with a new ASUS Northbridge fan. I did the CMOS reset procedure and brought the Opteron up to speed.

Larry sez: Can we play now??

Great news Larry - my only regret is that I didn't check the board for new posts before retiring last night and had to wait until this morning to share your joy. That is wonderful!

Yes Sir - Time to play! Your persistance is more than just admirable - this is one thread that will be embedded in my memory bank forever - just plain phenominal Lar! Congratulations.

Great News Larry absolutely Rock has said it all.
Now tell me Larry have you been honest all through that Thread or did you just try and set an all time record with 2632 Views.:D :D
    Congratulations on both accounts.

Well, I am humbled by all of your helpfulness and selflessness................... oh, and that's 2683!!

Now that I have been through the gates of compu-Morder and have survived the challenges of "There and Back Again ", I can pretty much sum up 2683+ views with:

    1. I damaged the first mobo and in putting in the 2nd one, corrupted XP.
    2. The damage to the first mobo broke the 7600GT video card.
    3. The damaged 7600GT card broke the 2nd mobo.
    4. New 9800Gt and 3rd mobo were needed.

Somehow, in there, I reinstalled XP.

Have a nice day! (as if this could actually be the end of my persistent curiosity)

Actually, our earlier discussion touched on the trade-offs of OC'ing the CPU. In general, which is better, faster CPU clock or a faster RAM timing? In my case, the computer seems to be faster with the CPU maximized than the RAM maximized. Your thoughts??

.... and now to OC my 9800GT... ;) .... vrooooooooom!!

Log onto your system in safe mode... adjust your virtual memory ..min 720, max 1440 if need to be adjusteds and run a disk scan... would help..

Hi Luke Kup, just to be sure, you mean that it might help get my RAM up to 400MHz?

absolutely, along with a new Motherboard new CPU new Graphics Card, and new ram and PSU.
Apart from that you will be fine.
We are all here to help you to do it in half the time next time.
    cheers

The dangers of overclocking. I once looked, and to be honest, I'm glad Dell stopped me :D

Lukeno1, done sensible and correctly overclocking can be a very satisfying and valuable experience.
Back some years ago I had a AMD Duron 800 overclocket to 1gig and it never failed once in about 6 years of service. I still have that Motherboard Iwill with the CPU sitting on it stored away. And in those days you had to bridge the level 2 cache to unlock the cpu.
I am only a few weeks away now from doing a re-build of an AMD Athlon XP 2600+ to a AMD Opteron 175 Socket 939 and the only reason for that rebuild is to Overclock that Opteron.
Larry knows the satisfaction that you can get.

The stability has been flawless at 2628MHz. Very happy.

I was wondering. I am now running 2x1Gb PC3200 DDR RAM and was looking at adding another 1 or 2Gb. Would there be much benefit??

I would go to a faster spec at the same time, you'd notice a fair difference. I think I've got PC6400 or something like that. :p
