so i finally switched from XP to Vista.

and the 1st task in "customizing" my new PC was to move the data folders from the System Disk to the Data Disk.

after moving the sub folders of my user from:
"C:\Users\Nick\subfolder" to "D:\Users\Nick\subfolder" I noticed that Vista sees those folders 2 times now.

in the left explorer bar when i open "computer" i see the user "Nick" as a sub-folder of the user "Nick" which of course is the same one.

My system disk is only 320 GB I did that on purpose since my older PC under XP has less than 80 GB on the system Disk.
That user's Data is around 230 GB, with the other users the Data amounts to a little more than 400GB.

So i figured id ask what I am doing wrong before messing around with it any more.

now I've seen some sites suggest moving those data folders to "D:\subfolder" but with 4 different users I thought my method would make it more practical when backing up and managing my Data.

PS i think this problem is because i am unable to relocate the "Tracing" folder

this is about the public folders, now the below link is instructions on how to deal with those (when i tried just moving them through properties it didn't seem to work)
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/move-the-public-folder-in-windows-vista/

but this requires registry editing: with my limited knowledge, it seems quite straight forward but Ive had very bad experiences with reg edit so id rather some1 tells me if its correct or not.

Did you use the method in Help and Support?

i did something similar, properties / location

but instead of browsing (using the move button) to the location I wanted I just typed the letter D were the C was.

You might want to try doing some tests using the method I quoted. Make a folder and browse to it.

The way you have done it has probably caused a hiccup in Vista's redirection process.

I use that method when installing programs, changing the C: to a D: (or E: ). That is a "straight" redirection, but working with a user's documents is somewhat different because it is set up from the Vista installation. It seems that everything that wants to point to the user's Documents goes to C:\Users\Nick\(Documents?) first, then gets directed to the new location. Also note that I mentioned the Documents folder. Vista has Documents, Pictures and Music separated compared to Windows XP and is geared to "organise" those different types of files. They are "specialist" folders compared to previous versions of Windows (one way is adding Tags, another is the Search process).

Read in Help and Support and do some testing. You can also set the folders back to the default location before redirecting it again.

    ok that worked.
i created a new Folder D:\Nick and moved all the personal folders there, and my problem was solved.
i noticed you you keep mentioning 'Help and Support' now i see no subforum by that name so i was assuming that is were were are Help and Support for Vista, now im starting to wonder are there sections of winbbs that i can not see?

Oh sorry, Help and Support is the Windows help system, Start (orb) -> Help and Support.

I just expect everyone to know Help and Support :). The thing about Vista's Help and Support is that it works really well and has lots of mostly relevant information. Of course it depends on what you search for (that is, the search terms) which is like any search engine.

Help and Support is my first "port of call ", as it was when I used Windows 95 (in Win 95 it was just Start -> Help).
