Stop Error: When runniing a legacy DOS program (RootMap) written in the Clipper language (v 5.2e) under Windows XP, I get a stop error: the program stops executing in the middle of it, and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to get back to the DOS prompt. If I run the program in the Safe Mode of Windows XP, the program runs normally, at least until it gets to printing (see Note below). I, therefore, suspect there are Windows XP settings I could change to prevent the stop error. What setting(s) should I change? If not settings, what else could be causing this problem?

Note: it wouldn't do to run the program in the safe mode because the safe mode doesn't include outputting to a printer.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions.

    Sam

What does the error say and have you Googled it?

And is the error new? Meaning have you been using this setup for a while without issues?

    Thanks for your reply, Steve.

There is no error message. When the error happens, the screen shows only what was showing when the program stopped. This program has run successfully under earlier Windows versions - only when I tried running under XP did I encounter the stop error. It has never run successfully under XP except, as I noted, when XP is in the Safe Mode.

I launch this program from the DOS command prompt.

Sounds like the program needs to run in VGA mode. At boot up tap F8 until the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen comes up and select Enable VGA Mode. See if the program runs. When you reboot after you are finished Windows will start with your normal graphics mode.
