    Hi guys,

I need to know where I can download full sized working copies of IE5.0, & IE5.01SP2. I tried the Microsoft Download page & all you get there is the little setup.exe that connects you to an update download thing, if you tell it to save it to disk. :( I want the full working programs.

Can anyone help me with this?

    Thanks. :)

    Hi Barbara-Ann,

I thank you for taking the time to post, but.......

On your first link, all they had for download that I could find was the same little .5MB file that remotely connects you to an update site, & it downloads & installs the program on your computer automatically. Windows update won't let you have the full 17MB or so version to save to your hard drive in a folder. It insists on installing the program automatically. The MS download site does the same thing, or it will give you the tiny .5MB setup.exe that just remotely connects you to an update site for download of an automatic install. Neither one will give you the full program for saving.

Your second link, as far as I could see was information about IE & how to use it & operate it & stuff like that. No downloads of the full IE that I could see.

I could have overlooked something on those sites, but I don't think I did.

What I want is the full 17, or so MB files. The whole Enchilada. I want that so I can save it to the hard drive & put it on a CD. I run Win98FE that IE4 comes on & when I have to re-format, I have to put IE5x's back on to upgrade to a higher version than IE4.

Sooner or later, MS will stop having the IE5's available in any form, in order to force you to upgrade to another one of his outrageously priced OS's that the IE5's won't work on, or you'll have to be stuck with IE4, one or the other. I want the whole program so I can stay with my Win98FE for years to come, & not have to buy a new OS just because I can't get the upgrades anymore from MS for the IE5x's.

    OK. I've jabbered enough. :)

Does anyone know how I can accomplish my goals, please?

    Deloris,
I am not sure this will work (worked for IE 6).
At the run prompt from the Start Button enter the full file name and path that you downloaded and put a "space" and then "/d" at the end of it and then click ok. If I am not mistaken the app will then ask you if you want to save it or execute it.
Once you have the file saved, extract it to a subdirectory and also put the original file that you downloaded in the same subdirectory. Execute that original file and hopefully you will have it.

Go to your local newsagency and have a look through the computer mags and their Cover CDs. They used to have copies of those versions on them. Don't know whether they still do, but it's worth a try. It's where I got mine and for the record, I still prefer IE 5.01 to any of the others. I can't go to IE6, because I still run W95....
PS: you will have to look at them carefully as the print on the labels can be very small and hard to read.

"You can download the setup files for internet explorer to your hard drive without having to immediately install it. This lets you save the files on your hard drive or cd or zip for later installation. In addition, you can also specify which operating systems you want to be able to install it on. here's how:

Go to the microsoft ie web site - http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.htm - and click on the version of ie you want to download. They currently offer ie 6 and ie 5.5 sp2 and ie 5.01 sp2. Follow the instructions to download the setup file. When prompted, save that setup file to disk into a folder of your choice.

Once the file is downloaded, go to start / run and type in the following command exactly as shown, including the quotes. Of course you'll need to replace the path to the setup file with the path where it's located on your machine:

    For ie 5:
    "e:\Downloads\MSIE\ie5setup.exe" /c: "ie5wzd.exe /d /s:" "#E"

    For ie 6:
    "e:\Downloads\MSIE\ie6setup.exe" /c: "ie6wzd.exe /d /s:" "#E"

This will result in a special download window where you can specify where to download the setup files to, as well as what OS's to download the setup files for.

Even though you'll end up with one folder and one set of setup files, you can then use the same setup files for any OS that you specified.

This is also a good reference.

    Ridgeway, Topdog, Whitphil,

Thanks to all of you for posting, even though I am not sure I understand some of the stuff you all said to do. I will study all of it when I am feeling more up to it. I'm a bit under the weather at the moment & the old gray matter is refusing to cooperate right now. :D

    Whitphil,

Either I am blind as a bat, dumb, or just plain stupid, but I didn't see a thing on that page about Download versus Install. I went to several of the categories on the left. Ones that might seem to apply & still didn't see zilch.

What am I missing here? Like I said, the old gray matter is in the toilet at the moment. :D

On the bottom of step 2, and the start of step 3 it explains the steps to take to force a download to happen as opposed to an install.

There are no categories to go to. It is the article itself that explains how to do it.

    You can download from here

You can download a copy of IE 5.5 from Here but it has been customized for Demon Internet but if you don't mind the branding it should work okay. Hope it helps

    Dear Deloris,

I understand that you do not want to bcome caught in MS's upgrade cycle, and want earlier versions of IE for your computer. While I'm sure that if you search long enough, you will likely be able to find IE 5.0 and 5.01SP2, they will just continue to get harder and harder to obtain. MS dosn't really want people using them anymore, and no longer offer technical support for them either. I don't think this will accomplish your goals exactly, but it will likely be even better in the long run. I know of two web browsers that are free for download that should work very well on your system. For some time now I have been using a browser called Mozilla that can be download at
    http://www.mozilla.org
It has worked very well for me, it is fast customizeable, can block popups and will always be available and supported for free. It does, however display pages more like Netscape does than IE. SOme people are not used to this and do not like it at all. Another, more IE-like, browser, Opera is avaliable at
    http://www.opera.com
Although I don't use this browser, it is one of the most popular IE alternatives. I hear that it can also block popups. It is also supported for free, and should easily run on your system.

Either way, you will not be forced to upgrade your OS. I wish you the best of luck.

    BDBD:) :) ;) :)

    Thank you BuckDeath,

I will definitely look into those. It is nice to know there are comparable alternatives out there. I'd read a little about both, but have been hesitant to try them. At this point, though, it might be the wise thing to do.

One question though. How many browsers can one have on one computer without them fighting with each other? I'm running W98FE & PopUp Stopper Companion. What effect would PopUp Stopper Companion have on the ones you mention. Should I un-install it, if I install another browser.

I've never had another browser, so I am totally in the dark on this.

I know, lots of questions. :)

    WhitPhil,

Something just isn't right here somewhere. I don't know what is going on, but for some reason, I can't get to where you are trying to send me. This is strange. I clicked on both links that you posted & both links sent to me to that .same page that I posted the text of.

    http://windows.about.com/?once=true&

Anybody have any ideas why I can't get to the page WhitPhil is trying to send me to. His links are not working for me. I have no eartly idea why either.

If you have enough space on your hard drive, you can have as many browsers on your computer as you want. They should conflict with eachother at all. If your going to use one of these browsers, you won't need PopUp Stopper and can uninstall it if you want to. I don't know how to set it up in Opera, but in Mozilla it only takes a few seconds to turn popups on and off. Go to:
Edit -> Preferences -> Click the arrow by Advanced -> Scripts and Plugins -> Uncheck Open Unrequested Windows.

Mozilla 1.1 takes up 10.9 MB. It looks quite different from IE, and will not display web sites that were designed specifically for IE as intended. But that is only a small minority of web sites. Mostly ones designed by Microsoft, like hotmail.com etc. It is supported by a community, and all upgrades are free as well.

Opera 6.05 takes up 11.1 MB or 3.5 MB for the version without Java. Web sites will look exactly like they do in IE. It can even trick web sites into thinking its IE, and display sites which block out non-IE browsers. The free version has a small advertizement window. Most people don't mind this as its small and out of the way. A version without the window is also available for $39US.

I hope this more than answers your questions, and good luck in finding a web browser that works for you.

    BDBD:cool: ;) :) ;)

    Hello Deloris,

Microsoft is only offering these previous versions:
    a) IE 5.01 SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie501sp2/download.asp
    b) IE 5.5 SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie55sp1/download.asp
    c) IE 5.5 SP2 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ie55sp2/download.asp

Just select "save to disk" when you begin the download. Choose a location that you'll remember and you can burn it to CD after the download is completed.

    Good luck,

******* Is there anyone else who is having trouble accessing the links that I posted above??????????

    Deloris:
    Following is the key info.

"After a few seconds, you'll see a dialog box that offers you a choice of opening or saving the Ie5setup.exe file (for IE5 versions) or Ie6setup.exe(for IE6). Choose Run this program from its current location and click OK. "

"Watch the next few dialog boxes carefully! If you use the default choices here, the IE Setup program will try to install Internet Explorer, which is not what you want to do. "

"In the next dialog box, choose the Install Minimal, or customize your browser option. (Do not choose the Install Now option, which downloads the IE setup files and begins installing them immediately.) "

"In the Component Options dialog box, the Setup program lets you choose which pieces of IE you want to download and install. Don't click the Next button yet! "

"It does not matter what you choose from this list. Click the Advanced button to open the Dialog box shown here. Check the Download Only box at the bottom to download the full set of IE Setup files so you can install them when you want to. "

"In the Download Options dialog box, choose the location where you want to save the Setup files. If you want to download files for other Windows versions, check the appropriate boxes. "

"Watch this progress dialog box as Windows downloads the file for you. The Windows Update Setup Files folder should be filled with anywhere between 10MB and 30MB of files, depending on which IE version you downloaded. "

"After the files have completely downloaded, you may see a dialog box warning you that the download and installation failed. Don't be fooled by this error message. It appears because you chose not to install the IE files right away; it doesn't mean the download was unsuccessful! You can now close the browser window, go to the folder where you saved the files (typically C:\Windows Update Setup Files), and double-click the IE5setup icon to begin.

When the Setup program begins, you'll see the same dialog box you saw in Step 4. Choose the installation type you want to use (Full is your best choice), and Setup will begin extracting and installing the files immediately. "

    IE 5.01 D/L

    Hi Deloris,

I was able to download my choice of browser, IE 5.01, (and then burn it to CD for future use) from Sandi's Site. Some good info there, too.

HTH :) Let us know how you make out.
