After installing Windows ME or Windows 98 on a computer manufactured
with Windows XP, get Windows protection error. Something changed on
newer computers but cannot figure out what. Windows 2000 will
successfully install on the same computer. This is after formatting the drive
and starting fresh, error occurs on boot after install.

    Hello Railbird,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

Is the hard disk partitioned or in a single chunk?

In whichever case, first try deleting and recreating the partition on which the OS was/is installed. Next, format the new partition and try installing.

If not successful and if there is a single partition only, download DelPart, copy it to a bootable floppy, run the utility booted from the floppy and delete the partition "the hard way ". Recreate and format prior to trying again.

WARNING (1) - if there are more than a single partition, such as a data partition, this too will be deleted by DelPart.

WARNING (2) - if you have more than one hard disk, in order to not make a mistake, disconnect all of them, except the one you're working on.

Drive was single partition. Deleted the partition, established new partition
as FAT32, formatted the drive and then proceeded with the install. Got the same
result with both Win98SE and WinME. Install went smoothly until complete, the system
then reboots and comes up ready for action, that's when I get the Windows Protection
error. Tried safe mode, step by step and it mentioned something about couldn't find
VX2 Mouse(that is close to what I got, has been months since I tried it). Since the
computer came with Windows XP, the drive was in NTFS format. I knew I would have
to delete the partition and set a new primary DOS partition. I got into all this because
I didn't particularly like XP or VISTA and decided to give it a shot. I have tried this on
two computers with the same result. Put my tail between my legs and went back to
XP. Still curious as to why I couldn't pull it off. Am wondering if the NTFS business
had anything to do with it as Windows 2000 installed OK. Thanks for your interest
and response. Didn't give up completely, am running XP on the FAT32 drive, so I can
boot into dos and get into things.

As I understand it, you didn't try DelPart, right? It does more than delete the partition(s). It also rewrites something in the boot sector (now showing my ignorance but I don't remember exactly what DelPart does) that a "normal" deleting of a partition doesn't.

Right, I didn't download Delpart, I started to download it and got a msg to do it
from my own web page. Copied the URL for reskit and will download it after signing
out. Had never heard of this utility but saw what it is supposed to do. Talk about
sneaky. This looks very much like it would solve my problem. I will have to plan when
I'm going to try this as it means taking off WINXP and going through the whole 9 yards.
I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks for the knowledge transfusion.
