    Hi there,

I have a Windows Vista Premium program on my computer. Thinking it would provide incredible security I installed for security the:
    Zone Alarm

    ES NOD 32

programs for anti virus and anti spywars security.

Right from the start these above 2 programs gave me incredible migraines. For example the computer worked at slower than a snails pace, even though I have high speed internet. I could not go from e.g the in box in the mail to SPAM , as the computer was frozen and could not go from the 1 section to the other. Ditto for freezing if I wanted to go from my mail, to CNN or BBC NEWS.. It got so bad that I could not even exit the page, as the page was simply FROZEN and I had no choice but to disconnect the AC power cord and start up the computer, and keep all 20 digits crossed in the hope that the computer would start again. Why anyone would put the above 2 programs from hell on their computer for security, boggles the mind

I deleted the above 2 programs from hell and installed the free AVG 8.5 and the SPYWARE DOCTOR programs for protection instead. The computer works much faster, and there is no freezeup, and my migraines are gone. Kudos to AVG and SPYWARE DOCTOR . Are there any other programs that you can recommend that do the job , for virus and spyware security ,without giving you all kinds of technical problems as the above 2 programs from hell gave me?

    Your help is deeply appreciated

I don't like at least three of the above: ZA, AVG, and Spyware Doctor.

If you're asking of my personal recommendations...

    - Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
    - Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

    - free PC Tools Antivirus: http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/
    - free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

    - free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus, or Comodo firewall..
If you decide to install Comodo Internet Security, or just Comodo firewall, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

    ===========================================================================

    Antispyware programs:

    - SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition: http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
    - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (trial version is fully functionable): http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Don't know about ZA, but Comodo turns the Windows firewall off automatically when the required reboot is done to finalize installation.
At least on XP it does.

    Thanks :)
I've been using Comodo for a long time, but I simply didn't catch this.

Could you be more specific as to why you don't like these programs?

ZA, and AVG are resource hogs, and AVG is having all kind of other problems.
    Spyware Doctor doesn't find much.

The August 2009 issue of PC World has comparison ratings of eight Internet security suites. Second place went to Symantec Norton Internet Security 2009, to which they gave 90 points and a Superior rating. Third place went to BitDefender Internet Security 2009 with 87 points and a Very Good rating. Top-rated was G Data Internet Security 2010 with 91 points and a Superior rating. Last (eighth) place went to Comodo Internet Security Pro 3.8, with just 57 points and a Fair rating, but a new version, 3.9, was being released as the review was being prepared.

PC World may print whatever they want. I bet, half of their adds money comes from Symantec.

In general, I don't trust any ratings. My ratings come from being at different computer boards, looking at what people use, analyzing infected computers, and see, which program protect people better.

The only rating site, I visit sometimes, and which feels trustworthy is this: http://www.av-comparatives.org/

Thanks for the heads-up from PC World. It's a magazine that I have always enjoyed reading but haven't yet seen this issue. I knew that Symantec had pulled itself up by its bootstraps (and certainly welcome that). My wife and I continue to use McAfee's Internet Security suite which came with our new Dells last summer. It also had not given either of us a moment's trouble or concern and has certainly not been a hog in the resource department.

Avira and Avast were more powerful than all existing antivirus on all infected PCs I came thru.
