Helping a friend clean up her HP Pavilion pc. Deleted temporary Internet files and cookies. Uninstalled an old version of Norton AV, AOL & McAfee following directions to get rid of all associated files.

Installed Norton AV 2009 and ran full system scan. Restarted after each of the above tasks.

Set up chkdsk on next reboot. When finished got a light blue screen stating unmountable boot volume & long message. Cannot get rid of this screen.

Turning off PC manually is only way to restart pc. Nothing has been successful in getting rid of this blue screen and message. Cannot do anything else because of frozen screen.

Have found information to reboot using Windows XP CD. Owner did not get program CDs with the pc.

Can I use my own WXP HE program CD (Dell pc) to restart the pc? Would it

Need to fix this problem as pc is used for home office.

I followed both instructions and no help. Could not boot from WXP CD, came back always to blue screen described above. Was able to get to setup menu by using F8 key, but none of the choices worked, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, ......previous configuration. always came back to blue screen.

Any other suggestions. I'm getting desperate!!

You cannot use the Dell WinXP CD on the HP. You can use a WinXP Home OEM CD.

See if you can borrow a Windows OEM XP CD from a friend or co-worker. Without a Windows XP CD to repair the install you are pretty much SOL.

Thanks for all offers of help, but pc is 7 years old and owner will probably just buy a new pc.

Your Welcome. If the owner of the pc is going to buy a new system then they can hook up the harddrive as a slave drive in the new pc so that way they will be able to save all the important data on the drive.
